Hope springs eternal that this is the year the food at Kauffman Stadium will be good enough to make you forget about what's happening on the field for a while. Opening day is tomorrow for the Kansas City Royals, and the fans in the stands will have a few new options and the opportunity to vote for a new permanent addition to the stadium menu.

If your heart isn't in the All-Star balloting (the All-Star Game won't be in Kansas City until 2012), perhaps you can get excited by voting on sandwiches. Aramark has introduced two new sandwiches: the Royal Pork T and the KC Ribeye Stack. Sales through June 26 and fan votes (online voting continues through July 5) will determine which sandwich is on the menu for the entire season.

The KC Ribeye Stack may end up being a fan favorite.

The Royal Pork T is a crispy pork tenderloin, with caramelized onions, fried pickle chips, and Kansas City barbecue sauce. The KC Ribeye Stack is a char-grilled ribeye, with cheddar cheese, apple wood bacon, sautéed mushrooms, crispy onion ring, lettuce, tomato and onion, and Kansas City smoky and Gold barbecue sauces on a fresh potato bun.

The KC Cantina concessions -- there's one behind home plate immediately after you walk into the stadium -- will now be selling fare from Jose Pepper's. You'll be able to get nachos, tacos and burritos from the local chain that began with a single restaurant in Overland Park back in 1988.

The Royals have also renovated the Stadium Club, renaming it the .390 Bar & Grill for George Brett's historic 1980 season. KMBC Channel 9 was at the third-base-side lounge earlier this week and has a slideshow of some of the upscale items that will be available, such as pepper-crusted ahi tuna and crab cakes.

Aramark will take a cue from AMC as well and offer an unlimited refill bucket of popcorn. Here's to another season of eating. Let's be safe out there.

Abe - The problem is that the food is gross now. Used to be great. They've had that Ribeye Stack in the past. It sounded so good when I ordered it. It's the opposite of good.

Baseball is American. Eating ridiculous food is American. I don't see the problem here. Fried pork tenderloin topped with fried pickles? AH MER I CAH!

What used to be a huge positive at the games is now a major negative, with Aramark in charge of concessions now. The food took a turn for the worse, and I always eat before heading to the ballpark now.

They previously had a popcorn bucket a couple years ago, but I think refills only worked on Sunday. I still remember my visit to the bathroom that afternoon after drinking three stouts and sitting in 90 degree heat while mowing down that bucket. Oh, the horror.
