Domo was a dud, so a new American diner is opening soon in Olathe

Sushi is out, comfort food is in at Olathe's Shops at Avignon.

First, a moment of silence for the recently departed Domo in Olathe. That Asian restaurant and grill was the suburban outpost of the cozier, more successful sushi joint of the same name in Brookside. The Olathe Domo lasted less than six months in the Shops at Avignon center at 14178 West 119th Street. It closed two weeks ago, according to Scott Buescher, vice president of development at Price Brothers Real Estate, the developer of the center.

But the location won't be empty for much longer. A new American diner concept -- "not a 1950s-style diner," Buescher says -- is scheduled to open soon in the old Domo space.

The Olathe Domo had received some scathing reviews from patrons who unloaded their anger on local dining websites, including a Fat City commenter who called it "Slow-Mo" for the languid service and unhurried kitchen. Its demise was not so slow.

The new diner that will replace Domo, modeled on the classic mom-and-pop small-town diner (not unlike the Neighborhood Cafe in Lee's Summit -- this week's Cafe review), will be called the 119th Street Diner and will feature a menu created by Pat Legler, an experienced executive chef and restaurant consultant who will serve as the executive chef for the diner. The venue is tentatively scheduled to open the first week in May.

"We'll have classic diner dishes but with a twist," Legler says. "It will be more upscale than most diners." Legler plans to smoke salmon and roast turkeys in-house and prepare most dishes on the menu from scratch. "We'll have three Culinary Institute of America graduates working here." The restaurant's staff will include CIA grad and local culinary consultant Eric Parrinello (the Canyon Cafe, the Lodge Bar & Grill) in front of the house as the general manager. Also in the kitchen: chef Jack August.

The former Domo dining room has been redecorated, Legler says, and he's planning to offer a Sunday buffet brunch and a Sunday-night family dinner after the restaurant is up and running. The 119th Street Diner's hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 6:30 a.m. to midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Here we go again. A bunch of has beens trying to throw names and titles around like they are actually going to make a difference. Who wants to go to a Diner in Southern Johnson County.... And why would a diner be open until midnight in that location! Mi Ranchito has done well because its ran by actual SUCCESSFUL restraunt people. Bars in Southern Johnson County have a hard time keeping business going until midnight! Good luck.

That DLC is one SOB if you ask me. You, sir, are a pretentious a-hole. You speak of Olathe as if it is Lee's Summit.

Gotta pour a Kirin deuce-deuce out for my fallen homie.

RIP Domo II, everything about you was terrible, yet endearing in a way that seemed to both defy and embrace an awful suburban surrounding.

The world wasn't ready for you.

p.s. Can't believe I never thought to call Domo "Slow-mo". Guess I'll never have the wit of the staircase.

I actually had great service at Domo and great food. Too bad, but I'm happy to see an alternative to First Watch for breakfast.

It's not a great location when you look at the major shopping district down the road, but the center does well. Mi Ranchito, Spin, Smallcakes and the small businesses are quite popular and make it difficult to find a parking space in their lot sometimes. And the traffic light isn't adequate for the center; it's a pain to get in and out of there.

I blame this less on the location and more on the terrible service and reputation.

Do you think it was too sophisticated for Olathe?

Wow, it left in a hurry and I'm not surprised. I hope the Brookside location is staying afloat.

"No no, don't go to Slow-Mo" became a catchphrase around my office. I'm glad that I wasn't the only patron who had an unsavory experience.

That shopping center is in a terrible location. It's down the road from the craziness that is the shopping metropolis around 119th/Strang Line/Black Bob, so people out shopping will already see a ton of options to eat out around the stores. It's tucked away so you can't really see anything except SPIN! from the road that goes by it. And if you are trying to compete with Spin, why bother? JoCo elite love that place and will just go there instead.
