SodaVie's cucumber soda is a savory refreshment

If the Pickleback -- whiskey with a pickle juice chaser -- is a sledgehammer, then the cucumber soda from SodaVie is a rock hammer, gently rounding out against your taste buds.

The sea-foam-green soda with the tiny bubbles is one of a dozen, handcrafted brews made by the GetReal Food Company -- the soda company operating out of the back of Big City Hot Dogs in Kansas City. The sodas are naturally fermented and made with seasonal ingredients, meaning that Benjamin Topel and Sean Henry are always rolling out new flavors.

In search of spring, I opted for one of their mild classics -- the cucumber soda.

The stopper releases with an audible pop and the telltale hiss of carbonation. This is a good sign. The sodas made by the GetReal Food Company are naturally less carbonated than their mass-produced counterparts, and, on occasion, a bottle may lack the carbonated oomph that separates it from simply being a well-balanced mixture of fruit juice and herb notes. Although, there is a "use by" date on the labels.

In addition to the carbonation, the smell is intensely that of cucumber. It calls to mind the slight saltiness and watery gush of a crisp cuke slice. The soda stands apart simply for its ability to be refreshing without needing to be sweet. It's just begging to be used in mixed drinks (you'll find it served with gin at Trezo Mare and Blanc Burgers + Bottles). But it's not too foreign or confusing; the body and bite are reminiscent of ginger ale.

SodaVie has both food and drink pairings for all its sodas. It recommends olives, salads, oysters and grilled fish as food accompaniments, and gin or vodka for cocktails. I can easily imagine making something akin to a gin and ginger with this and serving it on a warm summer night with a plate of spicy Thai food.

I've tried a few different SodaVie sodas, but it's the cucumber that I can't get out of my head. Anybody else like to unstop one of their pop-top glass bottles?
