Angilda was convicted in January of raping a 92-year-old Leawood woman while drunk and high on Ecstasy. The rape occurred last June, and the conviction could end up with Angilda getting an 85-year prison sentence.
Angilda's defense attorney is arguing that 85 years would be cruel and unusual punishment, according to the Star. "He's 22," Angilda's attorney Carol Cline reportedly told the court. "If there were no sentencing enhancements he's probably going to be in his 60s when he gets out. The upward departure (in sentence) means he never gets out." Uh, good.
First, a moment of silence for the recently departed Domo in Olathe. That Asian restaurant and grill was the suburban outpost of the cozier, more successful sushi joint of the same name in Brookside. The Olathe Domo lasted less than six months in the Shops at Avignon center at 14178 West 119th Street. It closed two weeks ago, according to Scott Buescher, vice president of development at Price Brothers Real Estate, the developer of the center.
But the location won't be empty for much longer. A new American diner concept -- "not a 1950s-style diner," Buescher says -- is scheduled to open soon in the old Domo space.
Opening Day is a tough ticket in Kansas City. The other 80 home games, after all, usually mean so little. The 2011 Royals are not expected to contend -- again. Yet the baseball world agrees that the organization has a group of potential stars coming up through the minor leagues. The 2011 season is the long layover before the jet lands in paradise.
Here are five story lines to watch until the 21-year-olds pitch and hit their way into our hearts, only to break them when they're eligible for free agency in six years.
A federal grand jury has indicted Karen Pletz, the former president and CEO of Kansas City University of Medicine and
Biosciences, for allegedly embezzling more than $1.5 million from the university.
Pletz, 63, was charged in a 24-count indictment that was unsealed today. She served as president and CEO of KCUMB and as a member of the university's board of trustees from 1995 until December 2009. The feds allege that Pletz embezzled $1,525,791 from KCUMB in payments from the osteopathic medicine and life sciences school.
UPDATE: The man shot to death by Olathe police on Tuesday has been identified as 20-year-old Carlos Villegas Jr. As for the assault victim, he's listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
Original Story (March 30): Two lanes of eastbound Interstate 70 were shut down after an Independence police officer shot a person during a gunfight Tuesday, The Kansas City Star reported. Near the Bass Pro Shops, the officer reportedly pulled over the car, which he believed may have been used in a bank robbery prior to Tuesday. The driver reportedly got out and opened fire.
The officer wasn't injured, but the suspect was. The suspect's condition hasn't been released. However, the Star reported that a body was on the ground for a long time after the shooting. KMBC Channel 9 reported that a sheet was covering a body along the highway.
Roxanne Janel Jones, 34, allegedly bilked a couple from Leavenworth, Kansas, out of thousands of dollars while posing as a pregnant, single mom hoping to give up her children for adoption. Jones also used a false Social Security number, and accepted donations from Christian Family Services in Overland Park, Kansas, according to the charges filed against her in Johnson County court.
Jones was busted in spectacular fashion by a CBS producer posing as someone who wanted to adopt Jones' fictional twins.
UPDATE: Turn out the lights, the five year party's over. Ex-KU athletics official Rodney Jones is headed to prison. According to the Star, Jones is going away for 46 months, and he'll have to pay $1.3 million in restitution to KU and the IRS (he'll also be forfeiting $2 million). He's the second ex-KU official to get sentenced to prison time this week (see more after the jump).
Rodney Jones partied his
Original Story (March 29):This is some bad news for two former University of Kansas athletics department employees: The Associated Press is reporting that the feds are seeking prison time. Not that anyone's weeping for Rodney Jones or Kassie Liebsch, who took part in the $2 million ticket scalping scheme (except their defense attorneys, who are seeking probation). In January, both pleaded guilty to their roles in the scheme. The feds want to send Jones to prison for 46 months. They're also trying to send Liebsch away for 37 months.
The heat in the kitchen is nothing compared with what could be growing in your backyard. Boing Boing posted about ghost pepper plants, not just seeds, for sale on the Internet. The bhut jolokia (ghost chili) pepper, sold at ghostchilipeppersdeal.com, is the Guinness World Record holder for hottest pepper on Earth. It measures 1,001,304 on the Scoville scale, the standard for determining the heat of a pepper -- that's about 300 times stronger than a jalapeno.
And for $16 (including shipping), you can test the limits of your common sense and ability to withstand heat.
Oh, you lucky bastards in Reno County. You get to pay $11,000 for the medical bills of accused attempted rapist Kevin
Scott Funderburk. You might remember Funderburk, 25, from the December incident in which he allegedly tried to rape a 71-year-old Hutchinson woman who ended up beating the shit out of him with a frying pan.
Why is Reno County getting stuck with the bill? KMBC Channel 9 reports that because Funderburk was arrested before being taken to a Wichita hospital, and because his medical care came after the arrest, the county will have to pay for the staples in Funderburk's scalp.
Middle of the Map Fest is just a week away, and local record label The Record Machine is ringing in the spring and festival season with a free show from two of its acts, Minden and Motorboater. Nathan Reusch, co-founder of the label, has been a busy man -- the majority of his label bands are appearing at the Middle of the Map fest, and he also helped curate the two-day event. And he's giving Kansas City a chance to preview some of the acts in advance for free.
