Balsano's Gelato Cafe will be moving from the Country Club Plaza to the Power & Light District. The Kansas City Business Journal reports that Balsano's will be closing on Memorial Day weekend and is hoping to reopen downtown in mid-June.
The gelato cafe is relocating to the former site of Bice Bistro cafe at 14th Street and Main. Drunken Fish (14 E. 14th St.) opened in February and took over the Bice restaurant's main dining room and rooftop space.
Balsano's has savory and sweet options on its menu. The shop has a rotating cast of 24 gelato flavors (everything from pistachio to wedding cake to cherry), which are used to make malts and smoothies, as well. Balsano's also serves breakfast all day. Breakfast items include quiche, breakfast sandwiches, and a coffee bar. Lunch features Balsano's signature chicken-salad sandwich and specials such as lasagna. In addition to having a larger space (the former Bice location is 1,200 square feet), the store will be open until midnight, for those who get late-night gelato cravings.
Balsano's will have the downtown market cornered on frozen desserts. Yummo, the former frozen-yogurt and ice-cream shop run by chef Rob Dalzell, which cranked out some droolworthy Korean street tacos, has been shuttered for nearly two years. And Fresher Than Fresh Snowcones, the snow-cone trailer that is parked in the garden at 17th and Summit, is open only on Sundays (and First Fridays). FTFS will open in May.
Balsano's opened in 2005 on the Plaza. The gelato cafe at 428 Ward Parkway was forced to move after Highwoods Properties declined to renew its lease.
