Dunkin' Donuts to open five new restaurants in North Kansas City

Dunkin' Donuts is coming north of the river. In a press release this morning, the doughnut chain out of Canton, Massachusetts, announced that it has signed a franchise deal to bring five locations to North Kansas City by 2016.

The first will open in 2012, and future doughnut shops are being planned for Liberty and Gladstone. The development group includes former NFL offensive lineman Zach

Wiegert, kicker Kris Brown, and Jeff Woodbury of the Woodbury Corporation.

The announcement is just the latest in a series of developments for Dunkin' Donuts. Three locations are in the works for Blue Springs and Independence after opening two shops in Overland Park since November 2009.

"We are excited to expand Dunkin' Donuts' presence in North Kansas City and play an important role in the daily lives of people who live, work and visit here," Wiegert said in the release.

Dunkin' Donuts stated in 2008 that more than 60 locations were in the works for the Kansas City market. With only two built and 10 announced, that still leaves plenty of room for more doughnut shops to come in the next seven years. 

Dunkin' Donuts made an Overland Park doughnut -- an original glazed with white icing and green and blue sprinkles -- for the opening of its shop at 75th Street and Metcalf (7446 Metcalf). What doughnut would best represent North Kansas City?

This also doesn't reflect on the Pitch's understanding of their city. It wouldn't have taken much time to make some corrections to the press release they copied and pasted....

Exactly. And it could be the first sign of their demise, if it says anything about their understanding of their market. (And how can a metro of our size support 60 of these?)

Yeah, I was wondering if they could physically fit 5 Dunkin Donuts in North Kansas City. And why anyone would go to Dunkin Donuts when Donut King is right there.

I read this headline and thought it odd that a town as small as North Kansas City would get 5 locations of Dunkin' Donuts. Reading on, it appears what they actually mean is Kansas City North and North of the River. Why is it so hard to get this straight?
