Behold The Winstrosity at Winstead's

This is the Winstrosity.
  • This is the Winstrosity.

Regulars at Winstead's on the Plaza (101 Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard) have likely been ordering the same thing since the place opened in 1940. Calvin Trillin once famously wrote that "Winstead's serves the best hamburger in the world," and you'd find plenty of people in the aqua-toned dining room who would agree with him.

But for younger generations, the "best hamburger in the world" is not enough. Despite being seemingly stuck in time, change would eventually come through the swinging doors of the diner. You can't keep the world of extreme eating at bay forever. And with that, we dive into Lunch Blog KC's Winstrosity.

The Winstrosity, according to Lunch Blog KC, was inspired by a similar customized sandwich ordered at Whataburger back in 2009:

A Winstead's burger, fried chicken breast, fried egg, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, onion rings, pickles, mustard and ketchup. It's the Kansas City version of a Whatafarm.
Though the bloggers had pledged never to order the Whatafarm again, last week they asked Winstead's to make its version of the oversized sandwich. Blogger and Fat City contributor Robert Bishop heartily endorses the end result and even has a suggestion for a breakfast version -- the Swinestead A.M. -- made of sausage, ham, bacon, a fried egg, hash browns and gravy on an English muffin.

But innovation doesn't come without a price. A large soda and a Winstrosity will apparently run you $12.20 at Winstead's -- a sum that would have made Calvin Trillin seriously consider whether he might be able to find the best hamburger in the world down the road a bit.
