The sad news is that the owners of Quick's 7th Street Bar-B-Q, the 54-year-old restaurant at 709 Cheyenne, don't always have rib tips. But when they do, they'll sell you a plate of the tender, meaty chunks, swathed in a brawny cayenne-seasoned sauce, with two slices of white bread and a side dish -- a choice of baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, or fries -- for a Lincoln and two quarters, plus tax and gratuity. Beverage extra. Cheap and delicious.
And speaking of beverages: For the first time in a half-century, Quick's 7th Street Bar-B-Q no longer sells bottled beer. Earlier this year, owner Scott Quick -- the son of this restaurant's founder, Marvin Quick -- made the decision not to renew his liquor license.
"We just weren't selling that much beer anymore," Quick says. Back in the day, we would sell 30 or 40 cases of beer here a week. But times have changed, and the neighborhood has, too. Most of our business is our lunch crowd, and they don't come down to drink at lunch anymore. They just want to eat."

Scott Quick literally grew up in this unassuming barbecue joint -- he started working here at age 7 -- which opened as a concrete-block barbecue shack in the Eisenhower administration. Marvin Quick and his brother, Herb, started selling smoked ribs -- still this restaurant's signature dish after five decades and two building expansions. I'll level with you, I've passed this restaurant dozens of times over the years and never stopped in because it doesn't look like much from the exterior. But inside, this family-run restaurant has one of the cleanest kitchens and dining rooms in the metro. It's so spick-and-span, you could eat off the floors in here, although, happily, you don't have to. There are tables and benches; the service is sit-down, too. The dinner platters here are all under $15 and include bread, a pickle spear and two side dishes.
After your meal, you can order a slab of Golden Boy pie. There are usually two choices: chocolate cream pie or lemon meringue. You just can't wash it down with a Bud Light anymore. But the coffee here is good, too.
Quick's 7th Street Bar-B-Que is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
