Chubby's on Broadway is something of a midtown institution: It's one of the few 24-hour diners left in the heart of the city. The newest version of the LaBruzzo family's iconic restaurant is Chubby's on Barry at 6332 N.W. Barry Road, a sparkling clean and shiny diner that Vince Frew opened two weeks ago. Frew is part of the extended LaBruzzo family: His sister is married to Chubby's on Broadway owner Vito LaBruzzo.
The two Chubby's restaurants share many things, including the same menu and the similar design components. They do not share the same hours. Chubby's on Barry stays open 24 hours only on Friday and Saturday nights.
The suburban Chubby's stays open until 10 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, 1 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. When Fat City first reported on the new restaurant, back in March, Vince Frew had planned to obtain a license to serve wine and beer. Now he's not sure that he's going to follow up with that idea: "The licensing process is a little more difficult than I thought it would be," Frew says, "and I'm not sure it's what our clientele here really wants. People come here because they're hungry."
