Whether it's the next food trend in the city or the correction of a hole in our culinary repertoire, this might end up being the year of the hot dog.
The Kansas City Star reported yesterday that Franks, a dress-your-own hot-dog joint, will be opening in the West Bottoms. Restaurateur Dan Clothier is renovating the space at 1623 Genessee, right next door to R Bar, across from the Golden Ox.
The menu of Franks will include the chance to design your own dog (the first four toppings are free) and a series of signature dogs. This won't be a mustard, relish and ketchup only kinda place. The Star listed off some of the more unique items on the menu:
The Chihuahua with chili sauce, cheese sauce, diced onion and jalapenos, or the Philly with peppers, onion and cheese sauce. Other grilled items will include smoked Andouille, spicy chicken brat, Buffalo Cheddar Brat, and Italian Sausage.Franks joins a hopping hot-dog marketplace as Curbside Cuisine -- a food truck run by Cory and Meri Heyer sells Chicago-style dogs -- launched earlier this year, and Dog Nuvo is getting ready to roll out its own mobile hot-dog cart.

Big City Dogs in Grandview has been around for awhile. They're not exactly "gourmet" dogs but they do offer the traditional Chicago etc.
For years and years we had nowhere to get a good hot dog. Then Relish came and went, and then nothing forever. This time next year there will probably be a hotdog restaurant in every neighborhood. Then they will all close and we'll have nowhere to get a hot dog again. So this equals exactly what kcmeesha said.
