New 24-hour Perkins Restaurant now open in Independence

There's another late-night option in Independence.
  • There's another late-night option in Independence.

Insomniacs who crave pie will be glad to hear that a new 24-hour Perkins Restaurant & Bakery has opened in Independence. The diner at 3939 S. Bolger Road began serving on Monday.

The restaurant is a franchise owned by CyHawk Hospitality, separate from parent company Perkins & Marie Callender's Inc., which made headlines when it filed for bankruptcy last month.

As part of the parent corporation's restructuring, 58 restaurants will close, including the Perkins at 7262 State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. The other five area locations in Lenexa, Olathe, Lee's Summit, Gladstone and Liberty were unaffected by the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

The new franchise marks the return to Independence for Perkins, which previously had a restaurant on Noland Road, just a block from a now defunct Tippin's Restaurant & Pie Pantry, in what could have been considered the city's 'pie alley' for a time.

Perhaps the Perkins can fill the void that was left when O'Charley's closed last December, although Independence's longing for fast-casual fare may already have been filled by Cheddar's Casual Cafe (4675 South Bass Pro Drive).
