One of the oldest continuously operating bakeries in Kansas City, McLain's Bakery, is moving out of its longtime location at 7422 Wornall next month; the bakery had opened in that space in 1945. "We'll be opening the doors of our new location," said the woman behind the counter — she sold me a butter roll early this morning, "on Tuesday, September 6. We'll never be closed for business. After we close this store for business at noon on Saturday, September 3, we'll start moving everything to the new place."

"It has off-street parking, 10-foot ceilings and a lot more space," I was told by the bakery employee. "Since we're always closed on Sundays and Mondays, we'll use those days to set everything up and be ready for customers on Tuesday."

The interior of the Wornall location hasn't been updated in decades, which is part of this old-fashioned bakery's charm — that and the thickly glazed butter rolls, pineapple rolls, tea cookies and fudgy chocolate brownies.
