Tonight the R Bar is celebrating its second anniversary. It's also available for sale.
Joy Jacobs, the owner of the two-year-old R Bar restaurant, saloon and entertainment venue, has listed the business for sale on Craigslist, asking price $200,000. We're pretty sure the building isn't included in the deal.
The Craigslist ad says potential buyers must be preapproved for a loan prior to negotiations and that Jacobs, who is raising a baby, Hudson Fite Jacobs, with her partner, Lisa Morales, "is getting out of the business to spend time with my family ... it was great fun, but would rather have a life."
Jacobs, who had previously opened and closed several retail operations in Westport, opened the West Bottoms venue to rave reviews in 2009. The restaurant's first chef, Alex Pope, was chosen as "Best Chef" in last year's Pitch Best of Kansas City Awards issue. Pope left the restaurant several months ago, saying Jacobs "wanted to focus on more casual dishes." Prior to Pope's departure, the saloon's head bartender, Sean Moriarty, also quit the bar iin the former historic Stockyards neighborhood.
Fat City asked Alex Pope if he was surprised by the news that the R Bar — which is for sale but open for business — was on the market: "Not really," Pope says. "One of the possibilities of building a successful business is selling it when the time is right. It's a beautiful venue, and I know the business is still pretty good, so I hope someone will buy it and keep it going."
Would Pope like to take it over? "If you can find an investor," he says, "we can talk."
