Extra Virgin's grilled bread & ricotta is a small plate with big flavor

Great chefs and writers have one thing in common. They sometimes just need a little editing to get it right. In a world where ingredients are being discovered like plant species in the rainforest, it can be hard to hold back. But one dish that I recently enjoyed on the Extra Virgin patio has found a way to make simplicity transcendent. Here's why you need to order the grilled bread & ricotta.

The house-made ricotta is rich and creamy inside a ceramic bowl. The grilled bread, brushed with olive oil, comes in thick hunks with a pleasant crunch. The two together are a brilliant mash-up of textures. Take a large spoonful of the ricotta and spread it across the face of the bread like creamy peanut butter. Only try and leave enough for whomever you're sharing the plate with so they get their fair share.

The best part may be the price. Extra Virgin quietly offers some wonderful happy-hour specials from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. When the bill comes for lunch, it's always surprisingly cheap, and that $5 appetizer of grilled bread & ricotta is a steal at $2.50.
