The last dinner of the year will be in the parking lot outside Tower Tavern on Friday, December 9, from 8 to 10 p.m., auctioned off as part of the seventh annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party — a benefit for Operation Breakthrough. The current high bid is $460, which you have until Monday to best.
The party that started in a Brookside basement and moved to Martini Corner will have an open bar, DJ Ashton Martin spinning, and no shortage of fashion backward ensembles.
"It's an excuse to have fun like Halloween. People can step outside themselves and dress up in costume. Some people mimic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation or A Christmas Story — the classics," Corey Bidne says.
The IT Security consultant is part of the eight-person committee that plans the annual benefit. Bidne expects a crowd of 375 people, the same tally as last year, along with one special guest — the Travel Channel will be filming the event for "Christmas Crazy," a show that will air in 2012.
"The origin of the party was a house party. I think we've kept that same spirit and just put in a venue that everyone likes. We want people that attend to have that same feel, not like they're walking into a big, intimidating event," Bidne says.
Even if you don't win the auction, you can still get Port Fonda tacos — the trailer will be doing walk-up service during the party. Tickets cost $60. A VIP ticket (which includes two tacos from Port Fonda, finger food from Tower Tavern, and early access at 7:30 p.m.) is $75. The party at Tower Tavern (401 East 31st Street) starts at 8:30 p.m. No sweater? No problem. You can rent one from the organizers for $10.
