Boulevard's Bourbon Barrel Quad is on shelves tomorrow

Thoughts on the latest Smokestack beer from KC's brewery.

Bourbon Barrel Quad is out tomorrow.
  • Bourbon Barrel Quad is out tomorrow.
Boulevard Brewing Co.'s Bourbon Barrel Quad will be on store shelves tomorrow. Boulevard gave Fat City an early peek at the latest Smokestack release that, at 11 percent, put a crimp into our productivity on Friday afternoon. And I'm glad to report that the return of Boulevard's BBQ was like an old friend that had been gone too long.

The Bourbon Barrel Quad has been popular since its introduction in 2008. It's usually best to buy it within a day or two of its arrival. It's a limited-batch release, in part, because of the number of barrels available for aging.

The beer is aged in oak bourbon barrels (anywhere from eight months to two years) with fermented cherries. Cherry is prominent in the finish and nose. The accompanying tasting notes suggested that vanilla and toffee also should be present, both of which were a bit more apparent as the beer warmed.

"It's smooth," said one Pitch staffer.

"Too smooth," warned another.

For a potent beer, it's really well-balanced, and any beer drinker in your life would be glad to find this in his or her stocking. Please note if you snag a bottle (along with the price) in the comments.

In unrelated drinking news, Reuters' writer Kara Newman discovered that Kansas City is "one of the next great cocktail cities." With visits to Manifesto, the Westport Cafe and Bar, Grunauer and Extra Virgin, Newman hit up some of the great cocktail spots in the city, noting that "bar-hoppers laud KC for its friendly, approachable vibe."

I swear Abe all you do it bitch on these boards. You've never had a positive thing to say about anything.

Just picked up two bottles this afternoon...13 bucks a bottle from a customer of mine who owns a liquor store.

I got mine on Tuesday 12/13 at Hy-Vee on 72nd and Prospect. They were 12.99 and I only got one because HyVee wouldn't let the guy in front of my buy more than two! Now I rub it in with all my friends that I have a bottle (I will share it with them)

Yeah, this stuff isn't that good. Unless of course you enjoy a shot of whiskey in your beer.

I personally dont like fruity tastes and overtones in my beer. (My wines, yes.) I want it to taste like beer.

And since my reason for drink is the effect, at 11% I just might give it a try.
