How do we fix the dining situation at KCI?

If not more dining, how about more vending?

Many of you will fly through Kansas City International Airport in the coming weeks or are just back from the terminals that are as polarizing as the Kansas City Chiefs. And just like stadium food, the odds of you being blown away by something you eat at KCI are not particularly high.

This is not Los Angeles International Airport. We're not getting a restaurant concept from an Iron Chef. There are some serious constraints to developing viable dining options — not a particularly high volume of travelers spread out among three terminals, chief among them. My latest suggestion? High-end vending machines — the food equivalent of the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines that are in Goodcents around town (Charles Ferruzza wrote about them back in September). All reasonable suggestions will be accepted in this space. Let's fix this thing in the comments section below.

I travel via KCI weekly; can't say I much care about the lack of amenities, albeit it is a definite lacking. Pity the fool who has a significant layover in KCI with long hours left to travel.

@Abe: have you ever responded on here in a courteous and intelligent manner or do you always just rant? Just wondering...no offense intended.

Nice pHoto of FEBO, a Dutch delicacy! If kci installed a FEBO, I would quit my job and become a southwest counter clerk.

I could care less about the dining options at KCI. I live in KC and never will be stuck there for long enough to have to eat more than a small snack.

The fancy vending machines aren't a bad idea, but any further investment is pointless. Grab a candy bar and be done with it.

wahhhh, there's not enough different fast food restaurants to keep me full for the 4 hours it takes to fly from KC to pretty much anywhere in the continental USA. I'm fat and it's my constitutional right be get fatter.

I've been to airports with lots of food options. All their food options are disgusting 3rd rate fast food establishments that don't exist outside the terminal (and with good reason), and they are all $7+ for a combo. The airports that do have proper restaurants are just Chili's and Applebee's rehashes selling the same bland Sysco food but, again at a higher mark up ($18 for an entree, must be good).

However, since the other cities have it, the idiots in Kansas City NEED to have it too! This is the same kind of dangerous thinking that left us with the P&L district.

The only way to improve the dining at KCI is to make the overall experience much worse. If we have all security for the airport go through one area and force people to show up 1.5-2 hours early, then we'll get some good restaurants because people will have time to kill. As it stands, people are only actually in the airport for a half hour because it's so consistently easy to get in and out of so there's no time to even think about food. To get better food, there needs to be a demand, and the only way to get demand is by forcing people into having time to kill.

The only "real" restaurant I've eaten at is that terrible "tequillaria" - which is the only non-fast food option in the Southwest terminal. Awful. Let's face it. Not even the employees want to be at an airport restaurant. It is an inherently lonely and depressing place.

The most I ever ate at an airport was Haagen Dazs ice cream and a pretzel. Otherwise it's never more than a bag of chips. People only eat overpriced crappy airport food out of boredom and necessity. Both of these are covered at KCI.

No one really cares...a miniscule % of travelers are waiting for connecting flights at KCI.

I don't think this is a real big issue. In 10 years of flying once a month I have probably bought 2 meals and 6 beers in the place.

No one goes to our airport to eat. They arrive, fly, get off the plane, get into their car and go home.

If this is such a huge issue, run a Zona Rosa shuttle every 15 minutes.

If you want to debate something, debate the merits of a new hub and spoke airport that is being proposed..

Facts...

1. Airfares will go up significantly.
2. Times to get to and from your car will be 10 times what they are now. (see atlanta if you want the future..)
3. We MIGHT get a few more non-stop flights, but I am sure international flights are a pipe dream.

The new airport would not be finished for ten years. Why are we not currently telling all the other airlines they WILL be moving and consolidating so southwest can have 1 or 1.5 terminals to expand their service? We own the place?

Maybe KCI can get one of those burger joints like they have at La Guardia where the programs his/her meal in on a POS system. Ive eaten there twice and and have never gotten it right!!

Its a shame that the dining options are so limited at KCI because it is the easiest aiport to travel in and out of.
