It's a hole in my dining repertoire — a Kansas City staple that I've never attempted to tackle with fork and knife in hand. But whenever I casually suggest it, most of my dining partners have either been there recently or admit to a bit of Manny's fatigue. I never push the issue because too much time has passed (this will mark the fifth year I've lived in Kansas City) to admit that I've never been to one of the pillars of Mexican food in the city.
But it's 2012, and I'm headed there this month. What should I order? And because this is a safe space, which restaurant are you embarrassed to admit you've never patronized?

Right! Manny's is horrible...so horrible it's packed every day and night.
Never been to the Savoy Grill. My fear at this point is that it will be old, overpriced and just way too traditional. I think of it as a blue hair kind of place. That being said it's been here for over 100 years I believe, so they must be doing something right. I just never hear anybody talk about it anymore.
I'm a big fan of V's Italiano, as well as Cacone's.
I am a wee bit embarrassed to admit I've never eaten at Garrozzo's.
Regarding Mexican food-If venture in to Independence, there is a place called Lucia's Taqueria. Its across from Wm. Chrisman High School.
Best guacomole. EVER.
I've been here almost 16 years and have never been to Plaza III, Stroud's or Savoy Grill, and don't really think I've missed out. As for Manny's, being from LA, my Mexican food tastes are on a higher plane, and the last time I got suckered into going there for a work function, I damn near broke a tooth on the wing nut that somehow found its way into my taco. I agree that Margarita's and Ponak's (known in our family as Pon-YUCK) are equally bad.
Manny's is meh, but Ponak's is unforgivably bad. I've had better TV dinners.
After finally trying Kitty's pork tenderloin, I've decided that the trek to Vietnam Cafe for pho is the next stop for my tum.
Stroud's - I feel like I need to experience it at least once so that I can denounce it with authority.
Eeew, I haven't been to Cheddar's either but I think I'm ok with that.
Ponak's I'm nostalgic about and will occasionally go there (I'm usually sorry afterwards) but I would have to agree, Manny's, Margarita's, and Ponak's are all sub par. If you need some good Mexican on the Blvd go to Rico's Tacos Lupe.
Hmmm. Margarita's and Ponak's are on the Boulevard, and Manny's is the worst? Don't think so.
Oh yeah, I have not eaten at Cheddar's. And from what I HEAR it is the greatest thing since the legendary plugging of the leak that ran between the tag-team toilets in the Bottleneck's men's room.
Like most have said, Manny's is totally forgettable. Maybe the worst Mexican restaurant on the Boulevard.
On my "To Do" list? The American, Bluestem, and Rieger. I may not hit all three this year, but I would like to try one of the three.
I'm sure that being embarrassed wasn't to be taken literally. I haven't made it to The Reiger and that would be mine.
I would gladly trade any of the handful of times I have eaten at Manny's to be able to wipe that dining experience off of my own record. The only Mexican place even remotely as overrated is Ponak's.
While embarrassment isn't really the word, I have never eaten at a Winstead's in my three decades of KC living.
Happy Gillis, Gennessee Royale, and PizzaBella make my Top 3 spots that will be easy enough to remedy. I've never been to YJ's either, but I hear more about the hipster cache aspect of it than the food whenever I talk to anyone who frequents the place.
I haven't been to Manny's in many years, once I found Rudy's it became my go-to Amerxican spot. I do recall their pork burritos being pretty good, or maybe just humongous...this is KC, so they are both the same thing, right? :)
I'm not embarrassed because everyone tells me it's not worth it, but I've never eaten at Stroud's either.
Manny's sucks. Probably the worst of the Boulevard Mexican. Just stick to the other places.
