Three months after restaurateur Karen "Nu Nu" Harris moved her namesake home-style restaurant, Nu Nu's Cafe, from its original location in Edwardsville, Kansas, to 3535 Broadway — which has had at least three short-lived tenants since Cafe Trio moved out in 2009 — the new Nu Nu's is effectively a no no. The dining venue has been closed for the last three weeks.
But new owner Melvin Shoats — a former investor in Nu Nu's Cafe — says the venue will be open again by the end of the month with a new name and a similar menu of traditional home-style dishes. "The menu will be pretty much the same as Nu Nu's Cafe, but we're removing some dishes. But only the ones that didn't sell well."
Shoats, who will be operating the restaurant with business partner Elmer Marshall, isn't sure what the name of the new dining spot will be. "We're mulling over a couple of names," Shoats says.
Shoats says he's in the process of upgrading the kitchen and getting new licenses and permits. "I'm also in the process of applying for a liquor license," he says. "That will take several months."
Shoats says Karen Harris will not be involved in the new restaurant.
