The menu revolves around small plates of food (pot stickers, spring rolls and chicken/beef/shrimp skewers) and plenty of dipping sauces. Sama Zama is one of the few places in the city to feature Okonomi-yaki, a Japanese-style grilled pizza topped with a fried egg, and udon noodle bowls. The restaurant will also open with a full bar as owner Erika Koike has already secured a liquor license for the new location.
One Bite Japanese Grill was in Overland Park at 8602 W. 133rd St. for five years until it closed last November. Koike's lease was up, and she decided to move into Kansas City to be closer to the downtown area. Pitch critic Charles Ferruzza urged readers to have more than one bite back in 2007 when he sampled their dumplings and tapas-style small plates.
The restaurant's signature sauces (including a gluten-free and jalapeno teriyaki, Mogu Mogu cream sauce and Motto dumpling sauce) will continue to be sold under the One Bite name. And good news for those hanging on to One Bite gift cards: They will be honored in the Westport space.
Sama Zama is open Tuesday through Sunday. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, the hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, Sama Zama is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The phone number is 816-756-3600.
