Could Jamie Oliver be the biggest thing since Pucks pizzas?

  • Could Jamie Oliver be the biggest thing since Puck's pizzas?
With the news that British-born chef Jamie Oliver has set his sights on conquering America (perhaps following in the famous insteps of footballer David Beckham) with the restaurant Jamie's Italian — 24 locations currently exist in the United Kingdom — it raises the question of who has been America's best chef import?

Locally (and maybe even nationally) you have to give the nod to Lidia Bastianich for her restaurant and cookbooks, but there are several other high-profile chefs in the running. Wolfgang Puck, today known for airport pizza and a recurring role on Las Vegas, once defined the Los Angeles dining scene. Which foreign-born chef has had the great impact on our cuisine here stateside?

Jacque Pepin, 50 years worth of influence.

My first pick is definitely Jose Andres. His Think Food Group organization is a monster, and while he's first and foremost a Spanish chef he goes out of his way to explore and leverage American food culture.

Nobu Matsuhisa- a pioneer in wallet-destroying U.S. sushi culture.

Eric Ripert is friggin' everyplace, but I don't think he's gone Vegas yet, so as far as footprints go I'll throw out Alain Ducasse and Joel Robuchon. These three guys have some painfully expensive restaurants....trying to think of well known foreign chefs who don't bring the pain.

Locally you gotta acknowledge crazy Mano Rafael and the wild islander Howard Hanna.
