Kiss & Tail and other weekend possibilities

Break out of your Valentines Day rut.
  • Point Defiance Zoo
  • Break out of your Valentine's Day rut.
If you think it’s time you had the-birds-and-the-bees talk, there might not be a better place than Kiss & Tail: A Special Valentine’s Presentation at the Kansas City Zoo. The 21-and-older event, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, features Ron Magill of the Miami Metrozoo. His talk, “Sex and the Animals,” covers the interesting world of animal courtship and mating. The cost is $25 for Friends of the Zoo members and $35 for nonmembers, and includes appetizers (petite grilled goat-cheese sandwiches with tomato-basil soup shooters and cupcakes from Cake-A-Boo) and two drink tickets.

Experience the joy or lessen the heartbreak of Valentine’s Day with the Lee’s Summit Chocolate Crawl from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Businesses in downtown Lee’s Summit are giving away chocolate treats to shoppers. A pink balloon means the shop is part of the crawl, sponsored by Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street (in partnership with Lee’s Summit Medical Center).

Need to relax? The sounds of Lonnie McFadden and a happy hour from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays help make the Phoenix (302 West Eighth Street) a good place to forget about the week you’ve been having. McFadden tap-dances and trumpets on the jazz club’s stage with equal aplomb. The drinks range from wells and house wine (costing $4) to a Goose Island brews and a key-lime martini, and the appetizers (sweet potato fries, sriracha hummus) are half-price.

Gordon Biersch's brewmaster James Hudec will be raising a glass alongside McCoy's brewmaster Keith Thompson to celebrate the release of their collaboration brew: Baltic Porter. The Collaboration #2 release kicks off at 4 p.m. today, and pints are $3 all night at McCoy's and the Foundry.

If you're still without Super Bowl plans, Fat City published a list earlier this week of watch parties this Sunday.

Food fights are typically frowned upon, but an exception can probably be made for the third annual CCVI Food Fight. This benefit for the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired takes place Monday, February 6, at Studio Dan Meiners (2500 West Pennway). The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with chefs Patrick Ryan, Jennifer Maloney and Michael Smith doing battle onstage with a secret ingredient and a panel of judges watching their every move. Tickets cost $75. Patron tickets cost $125 and include an hourlong meet and greet with the chefs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
