Are sandwiches our national food?

Baseball had its moment as our national pastime, and Budweiser is still trying to be our national beer, but when it comes to a national food, the jury is still out. Family Feud thinks the potential contenders include pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries. Wikipedia adds apple pie and roast turkey to the mix. And the last remaining pillar of the Everyman, network television, rendered its verdict recently.

In a comedic homage to Hands Across America, Jimmy Fallon last week attempted to stretch Subway subs across America. Commercialism aside, it's a testament to just how far the profile of the humble hoagie has risen. Are sandwiches our national food?

Lol @ Wink.... and while you may suffer the aftermath of a full blown Shitzkrieg after eating a couple of them, I cannot think of anything more goddamn American than the Zip Burger at Mug's Up.

Could be. Fried Egg sandwich any one, or maybe a pastrami on rye?
However, if sandwiches are, where does that leave meatloaf, mac & cheese, spaghetti red aka American chow mein-or a half dozen other names, & steak with baked potato?

The hamburger has echoes of that German city firebombed by the allies in WWII.

The Philly. Now that's a sandwich that sounds American.

The burger should be the national food. Invented in the US, unlike the sandwich.

The burger has everything an American classic should have. Normally made of beef, delicious, a little more meaty than it should be and customizable. A good burger can end up with a whole host of toppings and styles.

Burgers are probably most typically served as kind of generic chain fast food in the suburbs, but have some wonderful high end urban versions with the best ingredients.
