You don’t have to go all the way to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. Find your little bit of Southern heaven at Barley’s Brewhaus (11924 W. 119th St., in Overland Park) on Monday, February 20, at its Lundi Gras, a five-course beer dinner that includes cornmeal-crusted fried-green tomatoes paired with Goose Island Fleur 2011 and a deconstructed bourbon chocolate pecan pie paired with Odell Bourbon Barrel Stout 2010. The dinner costs $50 ($45 for mug club members) and begins at 6:30 p.m. Reserve a seat by calling 913-663-4099.
Got a $20 bill burning a hole in your pocket? Then sit yourself down at Story (3931 W. 69th Terr., Prairie Village) — you don't even need a date to enjoy the evening with $10 Sunday-night specials, which feature a special entree and a few select bottles of wine. Last Sunday, it was 10-hour, slow-roasted pork over a white-bean ragout.
My favorite bar in Boston kept an enormous brandy snifter of Oreo cookies next to the taps. It was easy to resist that snifter after the first round, but if you stayed longer than an hour, you were digging two hands in the free cookie jar. As a result, I think I'm going to like the Uptown Arts Bar (3611 Broadway), which will begin serving food this weekend — desserts from Cupini's and cookies from the Great American Cookie Factory. They're open Monday-Saturday, from 4 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
