Anybody found a decent pickle in this town?

Fact: Pickles make people happy.

Pickles are mostly an afterthought — the free side with a sandwich — as likely to end up in the trash with the plate as in your stomach. Since coming to Kansas City, I miss only a few foods, and the forgotten pickle is definitely one of them. I took it for granted that sandwich shops would have barrels (or even just a couple) of free half-sour pickles, a vinegary treat that made waiting for lunch feel easy.

I'm not talking fried pickles — there are plenty of those — and 'my pickles' is not an acceptable answer (unless you're canning and selling them). Who's got a proper pickle in the Kansas City area?

Checkers Grocery at LA and 23rd Streets in Lawrence, Ks has Nathan's Whole Kosher Dills and the sweet horseradish dills in their Deli section. Excellent selections!

The Blue Moose is now serving house made pickles and they are fresh and delicious without a lot of vinegar. They're still green and crunchy and taste like cucumber. They are sooo good.

For widely-available store-bought, always gone w/ Claussen refrigerated, but will be looking for Nathan's Sweet Horseradish ones soon. As far as local artisan ones, I'm open to all suggestions.

RE: Try Nathan's Sweet Horseradish pickles; not available everywhere but I get them at HyVee at 64th & I-29.

Forgot to point out, they're with the refrigerated pickles, not on shelf.

Werners in Mission. Step in and look to the left. Shop 'til you drop at a wide array of euro-pickles. or grab one from the counter jar. Nice

The house made pickles at Blanc are fresh and excellent. Not vinegar overload like "off the shelf" pickles. Since moving to Houston, I miss the pickles with my burger very much.

I like the ones from Oklahoma Joe's. Not for sale retail though, I checked.

There's a place in Topeka that makes horseradish dills.

C.W. Porubsky Grocery and Meats has lain across the railroad tracks in the Little Russia district of Topeka. Porubsky's has amazing horseradish pickles

The New York Deli used to have good pickles. I do not think they were made by them however.

Any restaurant that uses Claussen pickles is good in my book. KC Masterpiece used them when I was real young back in 1990. I might not have known much about food quality then, after all I was eating at KC Masterpiece, but I knew I liked those pickles.

The pickles at Quick's 7th St. BBQ are amazing. They used to...years ago...have one that was nearly lethal and utterly delicious. The ingredient they used to use in it is now illegal or you need a prescription or something, so they don't make them anymore.

Do you like spicy pickles? Vlassic has a new spicy one in the meat and cheese section at the grocery store. Beyond that I think Gates has some of the healtiest looking pickles around.

I like the ones that come with my sandwich and fries at Marble Top Cafe. Planet Sub sells my favorite pickles :)

Klaussen pickles are not bad. Sometimes one can find decent refrigerated pickes at the kosher Hen House on Roe. Otherwise, Russian store - European Delighs on 95th and Antioch. Or make your own, it's not that hard.
