Most places might use the comments cards to tweak the menu or evaluate their staff. But Jayne Torline and Stacey Webb, the owners of 3 Women and an Oven (14852 Metcalf), launched a major renovation because of what their customers had to say.

"We have a weekly marketing report where we take into account customer comments, and if we get enough requests, we make adjustments or changes," Torline says. "We were an old-fashioned bakery. You come in, pick it up and leave. But our customers wanted to be able to linger."

The expansion work began last month. 3 Women and an Oven will have seating for 12 customers, new office space, and a custom-cake area for consultations as part of their increased wedding cake and catering business.

In an effort to make people feel more at home in the cafe space, 3 Women and an Oven will begin offering French press and drip coffee from E.F. Hobbs on Monday, March 12. Each French press will come with a piece of Annedore's dark chocolate in the shape of the bakery's logo. The partnership with E.F. Hobbs is another new venture. 3 Women and an Oven's cupcakes have been sold with E.F. Hobb's coffee (replacing Ms. Nene's Takes the Cake Bakery) on the CoffeeCakeKC food truck the past month.

"We were thinking about a food truck, but that's a whole different storefront. We figured why not partner with the experts, and it doesn't hurt that it's the best coffee I've ever had," Torline says.

3 Women and an Oven will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this May, but Torline feels like she's launching a new business.

"I'm excited that's it grown to the point where we have so much going on," Torline says. "We're always up for change; maybe it's just too much sugar."'

The renovations should be complete in several weeks. 3 Women and an Oven is open during its regular hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
