Cake challenges look incredible on television. They’re even more amazing in person. That’s the idea behind celebrity baker Mike Elder’s charity CakeFest Saturday and Sunday at the Kansas City Convention Center. A dozen cake artists, each of whom has appeared in a televised competition, battle it out. Events include cake demonstrations, a cake decorating expo, a cake dive and a cupcake chuck. And at 1 p.m. Saturday, Elder attempts to break the world record for the world’s fastest edible car — it’s a hot rod made of cake. KC CakeFest is a benefit for the Whole Person, a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities lead independent lives. Admission costs $40 to each of the celebrity cake battles, taking place Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Hopeless in the garden? Help is available courtesy of the second annual Garden Book Sale at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (4801 Main) on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be horticulture books on landscaping, vegetable planting and flowers. Most books are priced under $3.

Why wait until retirement to follow your dream of being a winemaker? Jowler Creek Vineyard & Winery can make the dream come true Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with a Make Your Own Blend class led by winemaker Jason Gerke. He’ll walk the class through blending red wines, and you’ll leave with a bottle of your custom blend. The class is $49. Call 816-858-5528 to reserve a space.

It’s time you got in pub-crawl shape, and as long as you’re competing, it might as well be for a cause. The 15th annual Erin Go Bar Hoppin’ Pub Crawl is Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight. The benefit for the Ozanam Guild starts at Coach’s (414 W. 103rd St.) and then features stops at Charlie Hooper’s, the Brooksider, Kelly’s, Swagger and the Corner Cocktail. Tickets cost $38 per person and include a long-sleeve T-shirt, free Boulevard beer and Jell-O shots on the buses that will be shuttling between the participating bars.

What have you got on tap for the weekend?
