Is it ever OK to ask your server on a date?

I had a roommate, bless his heart, who often believed that he had very real chemistry with our servers and bartenders. In some cases, he may have been right. In reality, his judgment may have been clouded by a night of vodka tonics.
Still, it's a fine line between flirting and making a genuine connection. Throw in the fact that your server is a captive audience, and banter can quickly devolve into something uncomfortable. Assuming you're not on a date of your own, is it ever OK to ask your server out on a date?
