Fat City's Charles Ferruzza broke the story that new life would be breathed into the former Jack Gage spot back in February when he talked to Whitten Pell, one of the tavern's owners, who made it clear that this was as much about owning a restaurant in this neighborhood as owning a restaurant.
"We all grew up in this neighborhood," Pell told Ferruzza about his group of investors. "We're all committed to this community."
This neighborhood bar takes the comfort concept to food, with a standard array of burgers, salads, sandwiches and pub fare. The BLTCA sandwich gets punched up with sugar-cured bacon, avocado and truffle mayonnaise. There's also a veal meatball grinder and a fried-chicken po'boy. And they're offering hand-cut sweet-potato and french fries. Vegetarians might take a shot with the house-made black-bean veggie burger or crispy portabella fries served with red-pepper aioli. The brunch menu is stacked with egg dishes from Benedict to Florentine to stacked huevos rancheros. You can also make your own omelet, and yes, Kansas City, they'll have biscuits with sausage gravy.
The Beacon is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and serves Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. before switching to its regular menu until close at 10 p.m. The phone number is 816-960-4646.
