What's the perfect music volume in a restaurant?

The volume knob is as important as a light dimmer when it comes to setting the mood.

Crank it up, and it feels like you're overcompensating for an empty bar. If there's no music playing, those at different tables can feel like they're sharing the conversation with everyone around them in a tightly packed space.

The right level is somewhere in between, where music is present, but you only notice it when you step outside your conversation. It's something akin to that moment when you step off a bar stool and suddenly realize that your feet aren't as steady as you believed. It'd be nice if we could solve this one because there are far too many examples of both extremes in dining rooms around Kansas City. So what's the perfect music volume in a restaurant?
