Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle and other weekend possibilities

This is the time of year when competition barbecue teams discover if they're going to be a contender. And the Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle might be the ultimate measuring stick in Kansas. Talk to any of the 200 teams competing while chowing down on barbecue at the annual event, which is held from 4:30 to 11 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park (87th Street and Lackman Road). Admission costs $5 Friday night (no charge for kids under 12) and $1 on Saturday.

It's Family Day at the Farm at the Shatto Milk Company in Osborn, Missouri. The dairy will be holding tours, giving out samples, and teaching people how to milk a cow during its eighth annual family day. The event is free.

If you believe that you were meant to be the caretaker of an English garden, then you need to be in Weston this weekend. The 2012 Garden Tour of cottage gardens is Friday and Saturday. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 on the day of the tour.

The Baltimore Bend Winery in Waverly, Missouri, stays open late on Friday nights until 8 p.m. The wine of the month is Snagged, a semisweet white wine that is a Vignoles-Seyval blend.

The Boot is now serving brunch on Saturdays and Sundays (10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and as Charles Ferruzza discovered last weekend, the way to go is frittelle di mele (apple fritters) and breakfast pizza.
