When Fat City last spoke with Pandolfi's Deli owner Jake Hendershot and chef Grant Cansler last December, it was to announce the restaurant's newly launched weekend dinner service. Seven months later, Cansler is 35 pounds lighter than in the photo, above, and newly divorced. And preparing for a trek through Nepal and Asia that will take him out of the Pandolfi's kitchen for a couple of months.
That means no more weekend dinners served in the Columbus Park restaurant at 538 Campbell— the dining room is the former florist shop of the old LaPetina Funeral Home — although lunch service will continue as usual. Dinner service ended on June 30.
During Cansler's absence, chef Daniel Breedlove, formerly of Grand Street Cafe, will oversee the Pandolfi's kitchen staff.
"Instead of offering dinners on Friday and Saturday nights, we'll be open for dinner rentals," Hendershot says, "and we're hosting once-monthly special dinners."
The first featured dinner will be offered on Saturday, August 25, with a meal prepared by both Cansler and Breedlove. The menu begins with an amuse-bouche of watermelon and sea scallop, followed by a Caprese salad with house-made mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes. The next course, a house-made gnocchi with blue crab and porcini mushrooms, truffle and Parmesan, followed by a secondi course of braised short ribs, crispy gorgonzola polenta, and linguini in an eight-hour ragu. The dolci course will be olive oil orange cake and limoncello three-way. The dinner is priced at $45 per person; wine pairings will be available for an additional charge.
