Deschutes Base Camp keeps rolling this weekend in Kansas City. Tonight at All Star PIzza and Pub (6100 N.W. 63rd Terrace), there's live music from Cherry Bomb and a host of beer to be tapped including a tasting of the Bend, Oregon, brewery's anniversary brew, Black Butte XXIV, beginning at 8 p.m. You'll have a second chance to try the anniversary porter at the Dog Days of Summer Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. McCoy's Public House (4057 Pennsylvania) is hosting a benefit for Wayside Waifs and the giant Deschutes' beer barrel.
Whether it's for dietary or taste reasons, vegan and organic are no longer foreign concepts to the residents of Kansas City, despite the continued perception outside the city that we eat our meat by the shovelful (we use a trowel, thank you). Snack on some tasty gluten-free and vegan tidbits (smoked black bean chili and polenta pie with pinto beans) at the Uptown Theater's Sunday buffet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The weekly brunch is held in the Conspiracy Room (3700 Broadway). Brunch costs $15, and there's also a cash bar with organic vodka, beer and raw juices.
Summer is about drinking beer outdoors. And this heat be damned, the Replay Lounge Beer Garden (946 Massachusetts, Lawrence) is worth a little sweat. Truckstop Honeymoon plays Sunday as part of a matinee show between 6 and 9 p.m. Cover is $3, as are the Boulevard pints.
