Tavern is opening in the former Avenues Bistro space in Leawood (Avenues Bistro continues to operate its restaurant in Brookside). The original location opened in February 2011, earning a Best Of that year for its burger.
While the two eateries will have similar menus, the Mission Farms location will feature daily soups and fresh fish entrees. Executive chef Ryan Kelly, who previously cooked at Spago in Beverly Hills and Roy's Hawaiian Fusion in Maui, will be preparing the Tavern Cuban sandwich, crab cake BLT, and Cajun shrimp po'boy. Families should take note of the "5 for $5 Kids Menu," five options priced at $5. The dessert menu features Butterfinger cheesecake and cinnamon-sugar doughnuts.
The bar program will be managed by David Smuckler, the mixologist who won the 2007 Greater Kansas City Bartending Competition. Drinks to try include the Cucumber Ginger Refresher (Hendrick's gin, elderflower liqueur, lime, fresh cucumber and ginger beer) and the Tavern Mojito (Bacardi rum, fresh mint and basil, grapefruit bitters and lime). There's a daily bar menu (calamari, BBQ pulled-pork sliders) offered from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 8:30 to close.
Tavern at Mission Farms is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday brunch will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
