Magic Hat sent me a sample of its latest seasonal lineup, and Hocus Pocus is the one we're going to talk about today. It's been four years since the brewery made Hocus Pocus, and they'll tell you it's because the people spoke — its inclusion in the 'Participation 12 Pack' (a play on election season) was dictated by popular vote. I'm here to tell you the people were right.
The citrus comes through right away with the Hocus Pocus. Pop off the cap, inhale and it's there. This is wheat with the lemon already in it, although not in a manner that is at all overwhelming. Overall, this is a nice beer to say goodbye to summer and ignore your dying lawn alongside. It's certainly light at only 13 IBUs and an ABV of 4.5 percent.
At a time when breweries are vying for new ways to stretch my palate, I don't mind something that's not that complicated. Hocus Pack comes in a 12-pack with No. 9 (the aforementioned not quite pale ale with the apricot bent), h.I.P.A. and Hex (Magic Hat's 'Ourtoberfest' release). It's on shelves now.
