Browne's open house and other weekend possibilities

If you think about Browne's Irish Marketplace (3300 Pennsylvania) only when St. Patrick's Day rolls around, then you're missing out on a lot of fun the rest of the year. The market's annual open house is today through Sunday. There are clothes and accessories imported straight from Ireland, but the free samples while you browse are the real attractions. The open house is 5-9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.

The KC Irish Center (in Union Station) is hosting an Irish whiskey tasting Friday night. It kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Tickets range from $35 to $50 depending on how fancy you like your whiskey.

O'Dowd's Little Dublin (4742 Pennsylvania) turns 16 this week, and it should be sweet for you. The celebration runs through Sunday and includes all-you-can-eat fish and chips every day, as well as $3 birthday shots from 10 p.m. to close. The Irish pub also has a prime rib special ($19.96) Friday and Saturday.

Want to figure out what wine goes with what part of Thanksgiving? Then pluck down your $5 at Jowler Creek Winery Saturday or Sunday for its Thanksgiving dinner wine pairing event between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Your half a sawbuck gets you small plates of pecan pie and turkey to try and match up with any of Jowler Creek's seven wines.

Lunch at your desk might be as good as it gets during the week, but Saturdays should be fun. The Drop (409 E. 31st St.) recently started opening for lunch on Saturday at 11 a.m., and the Martini Corner bar and restaurant will help you forget the stress of the week. When it comes to sandwiches, you should eye the Kansas City dip (slow-roasted, dry-rubbed prime rib with creamy fontina, caramelized onion chutney, smoked bacon and Bully! porter au jus) or the sweet chile pork (braised pork shoulder, sweet chile glaze, straw-cut apples, and provolone). Definitely ask about the soup of the day (smoky malted-beer cheese soup and loaded baked potato were two recent choices).

What's on tap for your weekend?
