Good causes often go hand in hand with great events. One Eleven Cocktails for a Cause is a night meant to draw attention to National Human Trafficking Awareness Day - Friday, January 11.

The cocktail party, organized by the One By One Project, is from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Leedy-Voulkos Arts Center (2012 Baltimore) tonight. Tickets cost $35 in advance or $40 at the door, and that includes hors d'oeuvres, two drinks and a commemorative glass.

If you need an excuse to leave work early, how about happy hour at Conrad's Restaurant & Alehouse (210 N. State Route 291) in Liberty. The alehouse, open 11 a.m.-midnight Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, has a daily happy hour, 3-6:30 p.m. Longnecks, drafts and wells are $2 while martinis cost $4. There's also a collection of $3.99 appetizers, including rock house shrimp, buffalo dip, boneless wings, and chips and queso.

The Upper Crust Pie Bakery is back to doing what it does best: baking pies. After a week's break - Thanksgiving and Christmas were slammed for the local pie shop - the bakery is back with its cookies and many varieties of pies, which are available in two locations. You can pick them up in the lower level of Pryde's Old Westport (115 Westport Road), 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays or 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturdays, or in the stand-alone shop in Overland Park at 7943 Santa Fe Dr., 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.Wednesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

Winter is soup weather. And once you've realized that making soup from scratch isn't actually that much harder than opening a can, you might discover that you never want winter to end. Learn how to make Soups & Stews: Hearty Favorites with chef Tim Hall at the Culinary Center of Kansas City (7920 Santa Fe Dr., Overland Park) on Saturday. Students will learn how to make chili, pasta fagioli and chicken sauce piquant. The three-hour class begins at 10 a.m. and costs $55 per person.

The BadSeed Farmers Market is one of the few places in the city to get locally grown organic produce in the winter. The vendors also stock grass-fed beef, baked goods, cheeses and free-range eggs. The market is held at 1909 McGee from 4 to 8 p.m. Fridays, through the end of February.

What have you got on tap for the weekend?
