Last Friday, a 51-year-old Asian-American food-delivery driver, working for the Mandarin House Chinese restaurant, delivered an order to an apartment in Independence. Instead of getting a tip, he got a beating. With a baseball bat. He remains in critical condition.
"I understand he's in pretty bad shape," Independence Examiner executive editor Sheila Davis tells Fat City.
According to the Examiner, James M. Hollis, 20, and Brandy N. Locke, 29, of Independence, and Luis A. Reyes, 17, of Kansas City, have each been charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action in the beating of the delivery driver.
Delivering food to homes is already a low-paying, thankless job. Now it's starting to seem as dangerous as carrying shipments of gold on the old Pony Express. Earlier this month, the Dallas Observer reported three separate attacks on pizza-delivery drivers.
