The act of dining out is often motivated by a desire to not think about the kitchen. But Saru Jayaraman wants to change that. The author of Behind The Kitchen Door and co-founder of the Restaurant Opportunities Center United (a national restaurant workers organization) is speaking at the Kansas City Public Library (the Central Branch, at 14 W. 10th St.) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11. Her book looks at how the restaurant industry impacts the lives of restaurant workers and what the implications are for what we're eating.

Based on her own experiences and those of kitchen workers whom she has sought to aid for the past decade, Jayaraman delves into issues surrounding restaurant wages, discriminatory labor practices and unsanitary kitchens. In his foreword to the text, Fast Food Nation's Eric Schlosser shares why this book needs to be read:

The hardships of farmworkers and meatpacking workers have been well documented. This book eloquently reveals what is happening behind the kitchen door not only at chain restaurants, but at some of the most expensive restaurants in the United States...Too many of our meals are now brought to the table by the misery of others. The problem can be easily solved, once people become aware of it - and that's why this book needs to be read.

The talk is free, and there's a reception scheduled for 6 p.m. You can RSVP here.
