Ah, 1969. Summer of Love. Also, the year our mayor's band, the Amelia Earhart Memorial Flying Band, opened up for Jefferson Airplane. Seriously. Look at those fine pants.

We confess that Westport Cafe's Aaron Confessori is a hearthrob; read more about him below.

All right, there are more than five, come to think of it. (I just realized that we're leaving out potential candidates such as Nicholas Grunauer of Grunauer, Sam Silvio of Em Chamas, Ted Habiger of Room 39, Michael Smith of the restaurant of the same name and -- well, God only knows how many others.) And then there are the female restaurant owners, too. But that's a list that someone other than this writer should compile.

It goes without saying that every restaurant has an individual dish that stands out. In some cases, the dish might just be the owner. So go ahead and visit these local hot spots and try to catch a glimpse of one of our caliente crushes. To quote Amy Adams' incarnation of Julie Powell in the 2009 film Julie and Julia: "I read somewhere that it was bad form to say 'yum' while you're eating, but yum."

Things We Love: Ice Cream Truck Music

Posted By on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 10:00 AM

The slow churn of mechanical bells sounded outside my window yesterday for the first time this year. Until we got to the "the monkey chased the weasel" portion of the chorus, I was considering whether the city had muffled and punched up its tornado-siren test in Brookside.

But then a white van with peeling stickers came into view, bringing warmth on a day when the sun was intermittent and rain still felt likely -- welcome back, ice cream truck.

The first sighting of the ice cream van rumbling past my door is the seasonal equivalent of hearing "Play ball!" Sadly, there's no spring training, so I am not in midseason ice-cream-buying form.

I ran out the door without shoes, holding a few dollars in my hand, but in the time it took me to grab my wallet from upstairs, the driver had made too much progress down the block. He didn't see me, and I realized I couldn't chase the truck barefoot.

Next time, Chipwich -- you're mine.
