Re: “Barcode Sports Bar

New to Independence as of June of 2013, it became my "corner bar". The Pitch article summed the place up pretty accurately. Only now, a few weeks ago, "Bar Rescue" has been there. They eliminated the band stage and dance floor. Dancing is gone.
On the stage, BR placed couches and in your face TV's. Supposedly some type of viewing pod where you and your friends can sit together watching any sporting event of your choice, or play video games together. 'Gonna draw in a younger crowd'. ~Sure it is.
Additionally, there is a fee to use those pods, supposedly more at a "minimum".
BR did upgrade the the 3 pool tables, but otherwise cheap shoddy work seems to be their m.o.. When they broke camp, the Bar Rescue crew left a dumpster or more of trash strewn all across the back parking lot. "Pigs" comes to mind.
They also removed the chairs and tables replacing them with taller stools and high tables. BR did considered the homeless though; they could now come in, buy an inexpensive beer, go sit in one of the stuffed armchairs BR lined the walls with, and then take a nap! Of course, only if they're "younger". *L*
Bar Rescue "claims" the new "BarCode", formerly RG's, will be booming after the the RG's rescue show airs on December 22nd. TWT.
Meanwhile, the once full parking lot on Thursdays and weekends is all but empty. Looking, but is still the "corner bar".
Once 4 stars but now only 2 stars, I gave it three stars because of the nice staff.

Re: “Club Sparks

You would not catch me stepping foot inside this trash & horribly staffed establishment, nothing buts gangs gather there. I was in the place for a birthday party when 6 people got stabbed & beating by a gang back in October 2008. The bouncers did NOTHING to help to people instead they mazed them so they wouldn't defend themselves. One of the guys heart stopped beating when he was in the ambulance those animals that attacked them tried to slice his throat. Not a safe place will NOT EVER set foot there.

This dude is a closet FAG. I saw a picture of him sucking a black guy off.
Probably paying a debt. He is a punk and so is his bitchy little hooker girlfriend.

Re: “Lenexa Masonic Lodge

THIS IS NOT A MOTEL/HOTEL/INN - This is a Masonic Fraternity. There are no rooms to let, rarely even anyone there to answer the phone.

Re: “Aristocrat Motors

Pretentious and snooty. A car dealer that refuses to deal. I used to use them years ago when i drove a porsche, so when i moved back into the area, and wanted a porsche or mercedes, decided to give them a try. I went looking at cars and was ignored, even had someone make eye contact and pick up the phone to make a fake call so they wouldn't have to talk to me. Tried another car department and was ignored there too. Unless you have bought from them before, they act like you are something they scraped off the bottom of their shoe! I called and attempted to get an appointment and it took over a week to speak to someone. I had to actually contact one of the executive staff, and have them order someone to contact me. I guess the used car sales manager didn't like that and became rude and obnoxious when he finally contacted me by phone. The used car manager told me that the prices were non-negotiable at Aristocrat, that was their "Policy" unless you want the warranty or certification removed, also they would only give under "rough" blue book on my trade in, which is far from the case on the condition of my car. I mean really, no negotiations period? The car I was looking at was 5k above "average retail" on blue book! He said they soell more cars outside of Kansas City, so they can ask a higher price and that, they didn't care if anyone in Kansas City bought a car there. Also found out one of the cars I wanted to see, a Porsche 911 Targa 4, they were trying to get out onto the floor was only a few years old and rusted through! So much for certification! What else have they passed on to the public?! I would recommend going across I35 to the other German car dealership there, they actually want to get your business, not act like you owe them, or across town to the other Mercedes Dealership, or do like the Used Car Sales Manager suggested, buy a car online from somewhere else and make them work on it!

Hi Mr. Carson,

I am just getting back into town, and I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience outside our church. We at Revolution Church will be working very hard with the leadership of Neighbor to Neighbor, Inc., to resolve the issues you've raised, as it is very important to us to be a good neighbor to nearby homes and businesses.

In the meantime, please feel free to call me anytime to speak personally about this issue. My office number is (816)931-1858. Thanks.

Re: “Balanca's (CLOSED)

This was my place for a few years until late 2009 when I decided to retreat from the bars and work on career progression, becoming a home-owner, and advancing in other areas of my life. I remember chasing a purse thief, dancing my ass off Thursday nights, meeting band members, a few regulars, the owner Lori (which was freaking hilarious), and going downstairs-- my favorite part of the bar. My best memories were downstairs and the worst ones were upstairs. *lol* I also saw a lot of things that were crazy (in a bad way) and was even a part of a few of those moments, but I am not surprised it is closed. There seemed to be a lot of police activity there and that kept me away when I wanted to visit almost a year later in 2010. I was driving around between 9th and Main and 39th and Stateline, showing a friend of mine my old haunts and so many places were closed. We drove by the former Balanca's and saw the name had changed... so I came here to confirm it was indeed closed. I plan to check out the new place in December. Woot!

Re: “Revolution Church

Yesterday I witness an ongoing problem with this Church. It serves a soup kitchen to homeless people with no supervision on the outside. I'm not against soup kitchens. 2 homeless men were fighting outside. The police were called. 1 man arrested. Its chaos on the outside of this church, besides the fighting, yelling and screaming. We have a business near this church along with other businesses. We tried talking to the person in charge, Doug McNally and absolutely no cooperation with him. It might look pretty on the inside of the church, but on the outside needs some cleaning up. It reminds me when Jesus was upset that his House became a den of thieves. For shame, on the head Pastor. I dont think their looking for a solution? I think KC Revolution Church, at 40th and Washington Street, will do nothing?

Was this review helpful to you?

Re: “Hamburger Mary's

Request to all:

Please do not patronize Hamburger Mary's.

A few months back we were at a Hamburger Mary's BearBust having a great time. Normally we just pay in cash throughout the night, but since we hadn't gone to the ATM, the bartenders on the upper patio suggested we open a tab. We did. At the end of the evening, I asked the bartender what our tab was and he said it was $89. When checking our bank account, we noticed that our bill, which was $89 on the receipt I signed plus tip was showing on the account twice (one at $89 and the other at $99)

We waited a day or so to see if the second charge would be removed and it wasn't. We therefore disputed the charge with the bank. It was resolved with the smaller of the two charges being refunded to our account.

Today, we were at Hamburger Mary's. Had lunch and was enjoying beers and time with friends on the patio and were approached by the two bartenders from the upper patio who suggested we open a tab. We were told that we were no longer welcomed there due to a "conflict of interest". They said this was at the direction of the manager. After repeated requests, we were never able to talk to the manager directly. In fact, it was almost as if they were trying to avoid having to get the manager.

So, I would urge everyone to check your account statement when using your credit or ATM cards at Hamburger Mary's. Particularly upstairs. I originally just chalked this up to some sort of mistake. They happen. But after being approached and "tossed out" by the two bartenders who also were involved with the disputed charge, I fear there may be something more sinister happening. I hope I am wrong, but the situation is really odd to me.

I hope we all may find some other place to enjoy time with friends.

Thank you for your support.

Re: “Tower Tavern

I am writing this review based on a very recent experience at Tower Tavern. This review is relevant to how poorly the staff treats their customers especially when they are favoring bar patrons who are friends of the staff and owner. This establishment supports domestic violence. Especially, one of the owners who is a corrupt, chauvinistic drunk who will publicly humiliate you with unscrupulous lies in order to protect his drunken investments who regularly feeds his insatiable alcoholic cravings. He has no regard for human decency or women. The owner that I speak of is the geeky drunk with the glasses, Grant, that stands on the side of the bar getting loaded with other bar patrons. If you don't mind this type of behavior, then kudos to you. However, if you have any decency and respect for women, then I suggest that you stay out of this place. Domestic violence should not be tolerated. As a business, Tower Tavern should do what is best to make sure that people are not being abused by their partners. It is not acceptable to humiliate anyone any more than what their abuser has already done, even if you are friends of the abuser.

Re: “Enchanted Forest

Despite waiting over a hour in line, my kids ages 6-9 loved it and are begging to go again this year. Well worth the $3. It's likely a tradition for a few more years.

Re: “Marisco's

This restaurant has been around since 2001 and is really hitting its stride. The owners, who also own the long running institution of Johnny's Tavern, took the reigns back from their partners in 2010. Don't let the name fool you. It opened as a Southwest seafood restaurant back in the day but now serves New American Comfort food. Their daily breakfast may be their best kept secret but be prepared to wait a on Saturday and Sunday. The lunch menu has creative sandwiches (The grilled veggie melt with sweet potato fries is my favorite.) and small portions of their entrees that will make you want to come back for the full dinner experience. They are known for melt in your mouth, aged steaks, grilled salmon, crab cakes, and lots of seafood dishes. Stop in for a classic cocktail and a small bar bite during happy hour. You will be glad you did.
