Re: “The Gospel according to Carl Butler

Carl is an amazing musician and the kind of pastor (and friend) anyone would want.

The Gospel Lounge is a fantastic way to spend a Wednesday night! Love it!

Re: “The Gospel according to Carl Butler

Carl is an awesome guy.

I saw him play a song at his daughters wedding that he had composed just for the occasion,

Brilliant musician.

Re: “KU punk-rock professor Iain Ellis returns with a look at humor in British rock

Disagree. He was one of the more influential professors I had while at KU. His class, "Expressions in youth rebellion" changed my life, and my reading habits.

Worst professor I had during my stay at KU. Let me describe my feelings in British-talky talk: He's a twat.

I see no one has as yet reviewed either book on Amazon. If Mr. Ellis or his representative would sent me copies of his books (Kindle format please), I would be happy to leave my completely objective 5 star review of them there.

Thank you.

Re: “Mike Doughty's Soul Coughing demons still haunt him

Well. Like in most cases, you have to let the music speak for itself and I think for what it's worth, it's obvious that soul coughing was the sum of its parts. I tried to like M.D.'s solo creations, but to no avail. I think sometimes it's better to let go and enjoy the product - just the music' forget going behind the music. Enjoy. It's 21 and up? That's not very punk at all.

Re: “Mike Doughty's Soul Coughing demons still haunt him

Great to see Mark and Sebastian's comments on this. I certainly see the disconnect in what Mike wanted SC to be and what the other members wanted. I feel like if Mike had gotten his way, the band wouldn't have ever "made" it, so to speak. His solo records are all decent, but to me, Soul Coughing was all about the BAND. I've read the book and I thought it was alright, but he doesn't even make Mark, Sebastian, and Yuval seem like anything other than caricatures.

Re: “Mike Doughty's Soul Coughing demons still haunt him

I knew the band, back when they were a band, when Doughty was an addict, and guess what -- an asshole. Well he is still an asshole. Mark was one of the nicest guys on the planet, hands down, truth. Mark and Sebastian's comments reveal who they are, just like Doughty's shitty book reveals who he is.

This is funny:
"They just ended up with the wrong crazy person that wasn't going to let go of the boat. In my opinion, they were on a continuum between sociopathic and just straight-up delusional."

I mean, Doughty is describing himself here. He just is. HE is the sociopath. It's so damn sad that he can't even self-evaluate, 10 years down the line. What was all that therapy for, then? Seems he's ignored all he learned in AA.

Re: “Mike Doughty's Soul Coughing demons still haunt him

Very interesting to read the other guys' take on the Soul Coughing situation. Doughty's book was very good but as with any memoir you're only getting one side of the story. It seems like Soul Coughing left a bad taste in the mouth of all concerned, which is a shame.

Re: “Mike Doughty's Soul Coughing demons still haunt him

Great article. The first I've seen that seeks the other band members for comments. I am a big fan of Doughty, but something seems to be missing from his reasoning when it comes to Soul Coughing. My best guess is that he hates his own life during that period, and it is a time he'd like to forget, despite the great music. As far as songwriting goes, I'm sure Doughty was the songwritier, but I am also sure that the band's jamming came up with a great deal of what we heard, and while not songwriters proper, the other bandmates deserved a cut of the extra cash just for the sake of rewarding the entire group for the effort, Beatles-style. Even in the book, it sounds like they negotiated a slightly larger cut for Mike, which sounds fair. The bandmates likely didn't want the "credit," they wanted the extra cash because it's the smart thing to do when you are in show biz. Mike was the frontman. He had that already.

Re: “Block Party

Spent this afternoon searching online for all the terms I could think of remembering Will and Drag back from when I dated Will while I was in high school. This is Will (DJ Style) now, he's hardly changed in appearance: http://willtheweirdo.blogspot.com/

Re: “Block Party

I knew them back around 1990-93. "DJ Style" is Will Wilson. "Dragi D" is actually Dragon Davidovich (sp?). I used to have the same tapes mentioned here. Only reason I came across your post is because I saw somebody that looked like Will in a restaurant today so I googled his "code name" to kill some time. I haven't seen him since those days but sometimes wonder how he's doing and where he ended up.
