Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

I hope the MCC Board of Directors are reading this article. So much is filtered through Kathy and Mark and never makes it to them. The public is invited to each monthly board meeting, however, comments from the public are not allowed. If you want an agenda item added to the board meeting, it must be approved by Kathy and Mark. I would like to believe that the Board cares and, once informed, will make the necessary changes to save MCC before we go all the way under.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

Dear No Tenure,

The issue for me has never been about tenure. It is about collaboratively bringing excellence to education.

Also, a great percentage of programs at MCC are technical programs and those faculty in fact DO have real world experience from working years in those fields, so you are WAY off base on that point.

You are absolutely right that hard choices have to be made about finances, but not valuing input from the very people that are the most knowledgeable about their own programs is really bad judgment from leaders of an educational institution.
Over the years, I have seen one administrator after another added but they always said that we had budget concerns. That doesn't add up.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

It should be noted the majority of staff and faculty of MCC are dedicated to the success of the students and want the best for MCC's future. While changes need to be made, especially with regard to shared governance and addressing over worked/under paid staff, we need to come together to offer just as many solutions as complaints. I challenge everyone to respectfully offer 2 - 3 solutions to every complaint you have. The culture of constantly complaining is affecting employee morale. We need to be at our best to serve our students every day. Let's start being the change that we wish to see. Put our differences aside, compromise, respect one another and think/act positively and professionally.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

Also, let us not forget that the nationally recognized program, one in only 5 in the nation, that has served MCC Longview for 24 years was cut this year-the ABLE Program. The ABLE Program was established to help students with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnosis to be successful in their academic pursuits. The ABLE Program provided free counseling, support groups, ABLE supported classes and workshops facilitated by teachers to ensure their academic and personal success. Faculty was informed that a mere 30 students were enrolled this semester and were not presented with the full scope and magnitude of the ABLE Program and it's benefits and the President did not take the time to learn about the Program or offer the Director the opportunity to fight for the Program. This Program was one of very few successful programs on all 5 campuses and it's students are still hurting from the President's decision. The Program was told it is a budgetary issue for the for-profit Program; however, this was quickly determined to be a facade for the true intentions of the leadership on campus. At every turn, the Program, in trying to extend it's reach to offer help to more students as well as to bring in Grant monies, was given a resounding "no" and redirected. I have seen this campus turn it's back on academics and focus on creating an MCC that focuses on sports and has shifted from an academic institution to a business model. For my money, my students will be attending another institution.

The issue is respect for shared governance. Power, control and top down decision making over every aspect of a college's operations is not healthy.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

In my experience as faculty at MCC Longview, I have learned that the President and the Chancellor and, quite frankly, some of the Deans do not care about the faculty and treat them as easily expendable. Also, I have experienced a culture of secrecy, manipulation of facts and a business institution rather than an academic institution. Though the President speaks towards desiring nationally recognized programs and student success, he has placed more emphasis on sports while cutting longstanding programs and not acknowledging all students in his vision for success, rather, those that meet his standard. I guess MCC Longview only has a few more years from this President as he is using the institution merely as a resume builder on his path towards larger colleges or universities. There are definitely people "in the know" who have made connections and suck at the teat of power to ensure the safety of their programs; however, in doing so, have contributed to the destruction of other necessary programs.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

I find it rather ironic that college faculty can claim to be all knowing about items such as politics, operating a business, world affairs, CEO salaries, minimum wage, military, etc when in fact the overwhelming majority of them have never stepped one foot outside of academia and have no experience other than what they read in text books. Yet they are insulted when someone enters their coveted domain without the proper background creditionals.....how dare they! In the real world there is not unlimited funds coming into businesses so hard decisions and sacrifices need to be made. They may be surprised to know that us working stiffs out here doing real work for a living don't have tenure either. "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach". If you can't teach very well.....then you should probably join the rest of us.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

I was a 18-year faculty member whose life and the lives of my staff were threatened by an "unmedicated student" whose description is similar to the one in this article who attacked Dean Dimmitt. The student called in a number of threats to my department and to the advising and counseling department, telling us that he was going "to blow" us away and that the campus would "look like Columbine." The day of the first call to my department, I was told by the president and the police chief that this was not serious. I was then called on the carpet by Walter-Mack, who told me my concerns regarding campus safety and communication were not valid, that the problem was mine. After a year of frayed nerves and disrespectful comments by campus administrators, I took early retirement. It's a sad state. I loved my work and the community college, believing in its mission for our community and our city.

On another note . . .if your part of the general public that is wondering why you should even care about this article, it is because your tax money is going to fund this place. State Aid and local taxes make up 54% of their revenue.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

Take a deeper look into IWI and it's phony financial statements and over paid, barely worked employees. Most of the people paid to deliver services for IWI contracts are friends of the IWI administrators or staff. They simply form an LLC and bill outrageous amounts of money to the college for service. One guy is paid almost $11K per month because he maintains one account. IWI employees are promoted upon request of administrators without having to post their positions.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

MCC is the Old Police Dump of the KCMO Poilce Dept... And they have a Swat team not to mention each campus will soon have holding cells for all the serious crimes that are not committed. The only crime being committed is the Chancelors fascination with His Police Dept and KWM. More interesting is the amount of students enrolled at the Penn Valley location that can't read or write past 3rd grade level all graduates of KCMO schools which KWM drove into Ditch.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

The MCC police department is following the same path. Money is being spent on needless things, such as a new "headquarters" and needless equipment, while ignoring dangerously low staffing. They are hiring 6-7 officers just to replace all of the experienced officers who have left under a regime that thinks all of the officers inept. The new chief was pleasant and approachable. Once he hired his buddy from the highway patrol, an unqualified, inexperienced and uneducated man, all has changed. The chief can't be found and the deputy chief rules all through arrogance and intimidation. The deputy chief sees all below him as incompetent and he lets it be known. A third of the department has left and more are leaving. They are replacing 25-30 year major city police officers with minimally experienced officers who don't realize what they are getting themselves into. The rank and file members of the police department support the faculty and staff of MCC and they hope for the top two of the PD to be gone as well.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

James and Walter-Mack don't appear to know quality if they see it. MCC has a state of the art facility known as the Health Science Institute at 3444 Broadway. It is like NO other in the region at the Associate degree level. Instead of championing the forward thinking work of the faculty there, they parade dignitaries through but provide road blocks to health programs that graduate individuals that make $40-60,000 to start. Yes, give us more leadership like that.

Let us not forget the cutting of the Nationally Recognized Longview Debate Team. Yes and KCKCC kept theirs is now a nationally known program.

"MCC doesn't think so." Actually we do. Christina Medina reports directly to Walter-Mack. Of course she is going to speak highly of her (she's in bed with her). It's the only reason she even has a job at MCC.

Let’s not neglect to mention the destruction of MCC-Longview’s nationally recognized Writing Intensive Program. Remember when we were a Time/Princeton Review College of the Year.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

In a meeting with MCC leaders, James when asked about employee morale stated that employee morale is not his concern. This feeling trickled down to other MCC leaders. Dr. Joe Seabrooks President of Penn Valley College when asked about campus morale during a campus wide meeting told faculty and staff that if you are not happy there is the door. Many found the door later.

Under James, one of the most needed programs the Human Service program has been cut while over 200 students have been told to switch their degrees.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

As a long term faculty member at MCC, I have seen the atmosphere at MCC dramatically decline when James and Walter Mack came into "power". They show disrespect to faculty in the actions they repeatedly take, giving faculty the impression they think faculty are all guilty of incompetence. when there is no evidence to suggest that. It is a shame they have to micromanage perfectly competent people when they have no background to do so.

Re: “Mutiny looms at the ineptly run Metropolitan Community College

James and Mack love the power trip they are on. They need to be removed from their positions before every good educator they have leaves!

They are trying to force teachers who have tenure out, so they can hire others under service contracts, that they can fire whenever James and Mack want. They want to get rid of tenure for every employee! Do you hear this board! Take action before it is too late!
