When downtown Kansas Citys historic Hotel Phillips was renovated a few years ago, the former sports bar on the eastern corner of the hostelry was re-born as 12 Baltimore, which is still a saloon but also serves breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week. The menu isnt as snazzy or costly as the Phillips Chophouse downstairs, but offers a menu thats both sophisticated (salad nicoise, shrimp quesadillas, sushi nachos) and comforting to the meat-and-potatoes set: a shaved prime-rib sandwich, crispy chicken chop salad, fish and chips, mini meat loafs. The kitchen staff doesnt skimp on ingredients to create stylish versions of familiar fare. The burger is made with duck fat, the chicken wings are tossed in hot and sour tequila-lime sauce, and the macaroni and cheese uses spaetzle instead of macaroni. — Charles Ferruzza
