When Sandra Martin and Isaac Alongi put out their self-published Best Little Coffee Shops in Kansas City, they started what we hope will be the first in a series of travelogues for fun trips around the metro. The married writer-photographer duo's combination of straightforward prose and glowing pictures captures the ambience of 17 java joints, including bustling midtown depots such as Broadway Café and quaint hubs such as Parkville Coffee & Fudge. The photographs capture this world from a highly caffeinated perspective, offering close-ups of the eccentricities that make each shop unique. There's the color photo of the ornate tile work inside the bohemian-themed Y.J.'s, for example, and the black-and-white view from atop an industrial spiral staircase inside the City Market Coffeehouse. It's all bound in a package small enough to fit in a glove box.
