Westin Crown Center, 1 E. Pershing Rd. 816-391-4460
It's getting harder and harder to find a truly elegant brunch. Putting on an elaborate buffet can be costly to restaurant owners, and too few restaurants set out buffets with more attention to quality than quantity. Benton's, on top of the Westin Crown Center Hotel, is the exception to this rule. The pretty dining room affords a superb Sunday morning view of Kansas City's skyline, and tables are covered with crisp white cloths, pretty china and blue glass goblets. Most exquisite, however, is the array of food. Cold dishes include caviar, salmon, shrimp, oysters and salads; hot fare awaits in heavy silver chafing dishes with lids that roll back to reveal freshly made eggs Benedict dripping with a fine Hollandaise sauce, beef tenderloin, and free-range chicken in a light curry sauce. Several of the extremely attentive servers, such as the dashing Hector Rodriguez, are veterans of this attractive dining room. Brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, and at $32.95, it's one of the most expensive in the city. But if you're going to splurge, then really splurge.
