We won't pretend that there's a tremendous amount of arithmetic involved in the selection of Best Local Song. Many excellent songs were recorded and released in the Kansas City area over the past year, across a wide array of hard-to-compare genres. Lacking a strict objective framework, we go instead with our gut favorite: "Liars" by the Caves. It's an unassuming track, strummy and midtempo, a soundtrack for a gray autumn afternoon. We keep returning to its moments of brooding beauty, like the way the voices of Andrew Ashby and Elizabeth Bohannon collide on lines I keep forgetting to play guitar and I don't believe in protecting liars. At two and a half minutes, "Liars" is almost too short, but isn't that always the case with your favorite songs?
