Re: “Friends Sushi & Bento Place

Sushi isn't cheap...it really shouldn't be, so the fact that people keep saying that the prices at Friends are high should realize that they are actually quite reasonable. My husband and I have been patrons at Friends for about 2 years now...started going back when we were referred by another friend of ours to try them on Monday nights, since they have a $1 sushi special that night. (Certain rolls are available for $3.99 as well.) We were hooked! The sushi is delicious, the servers are reliable, and as long as you get there early on Mondays (before 6:30, I mean), the wait for the sushi isn't terrible. If you put in a second order, expect to wait a while. We order all our sushi at once now, since we're so used to what we want and how long it might take to get it. (Sushi isn't a burger you throw on a grill and cook for 8 minutes...it takes time to create it, so plan on waiting at least 20 minutes during a slow time if you order more than 10 pieces.)

Re: “Nara

A very busy place no doubt, yet the overall product is worth the wait. Why does the place get busy, you ask? Good service, good sushi and sashimi, with respectably strong drinks. Having personally lived in Japan, this is a good stop in Kansas City for Japanese fare and happy hour libations. Those that say otherwise, obviously lack the international cultural experience. And No, I have zero affiliation with this establishment, aside from the consumer standpoint. I will be there again and again..

Re: “Nara

(continued) Every waiter/waitress I liked has been removed as well. The bar staff has improved, immensely. But good luck getting a good seat! The bar is so tiny for them to be focusing all of the place's energy on it. The sushi is awsome. Very fresh. Takes a while but if you saw how small the sushi bar was you'd understand.

Re: “Nara

Oh. My. God. Can you say clusterf***? The place is, to quote, "demented and sad but social". I've been there quite a bit. I will probably not go back except to drink, maybe. I've told my friends that we should eat somewhere else and really only go there for drinks if necessary. I'm telling you this too. Atmosphere is very pretty but just know that with all of it's glitz it lacks ev-e-ry-thing else. Then I first went there, last year, the place was awesome. They had this wacky chef who made very interesting cuisine, and he would come out and chat with you about it. The food was amazing. There was a pretty solid staff and the atmosphere was delightful. Since then every plate that I liked has been removed from the menu. A couple of wines I liked are no more. For this restaurant wanting to be known for sake, that menu certainly hasn't grown much. Cocktails have become bizzaro >Pernod tastes like liquorice people, just so you know

Re: “Nara

Sushi is not fresh. Other dishes are overpriced and bland. Chefs don't know how to make the rolls or sushi very well as they kept falling apart. Service is also abysmal. Atmosphere is great however. Go there to hang out and drink, just don't eat there.

Re: “One Bite Japanese Grill

Excellent concept dining brings trendy style to bland suburbia. My blessing is that I live within walking distance. Try my favorite: the seaweed salad. The constrast in texture and taste alone would put it around $15 under similar circumstances in New York or LA. Here it's the best value on the menu at $5. A chat with the owner makes the experience. She's friendly, fast, and on-site at all times.

Re: “Matsu Japanese Restaurant

They have a bubble tea sign displayed in their window, so we stopped in once to try their version. It was really the worst bubble tea we have ever had. If you want really excellent bubble tea go around the corner to Tea Drops in Westport. As for the sushi, it was good but more expensive than other places. Try Friends or Domo instead!

Re: “Friends Sushi & Bento Place

My husband and I love Friends and have been back there many times for their sushi and their bento boxes. I recommend going for lunch as the pricing is more affordable. The staff is always prompt and courteous, and we like the simple and friendly decor.

Re: “Domo Sushi & Grill

I highly recommend Domo, we had a great sushi lunch there. Excellent quality and the server was very gracious and friendly. It's small and tucked away in Brookside, but don't let that fool you - their sushi is top quality. We ordered their mochi for dessert, expecting the usual frozen mochi ice cream. Instead we got this amazing rice paste and coconut triangle wrapped in steamed banana leaves. Amazing! I would definitely go again, their lunch prices are extremely affordable.
