Re: “Nara

All I can say is that nobody should ever read reviews of a restaurant, including my review.
The negative reviews of Nara MUST be from competitors because the stories are impossible.
Nara is the best. Period. Great location. The best wait staff in the city. And hands down the best sushi in the city. Go there and find out for your self. And never read a restaurant review again.

Re: “Touche

Best nightclub in Johnson county. Crowd is 30-50 yr olds. Alot of seating, classy, clean, good dance floor...a NON sports bar)))! Reasonable drink prices. Lifestyle crowd even rented out back room a couple of months back!

Re: “Slow Ride Roadhouse

Awesome place, great atmosphere, friendly staff and a good mix of people. We'll worth the ride from Lee's Summit, MO.

Re: “Chaz on the Plaza

The lounge has jazz all but one night a week. No cover. A smaller menu from a very good kitchen is great. Staff nice and personable. Outdoor space fun and in summer there is string concerts on the green and in winter a couple of fire pits. Seasonal drinks for summer. A great place to start the evening or end an evening.

Re: “Nara

Wow - thought maybe Nara needed a current review. This place is class act. I dine there often and always get knowledgeable staff and servers. They are friendly and know what they are selling. The food; the sushi is freshest in town and the two sushi chefs are from Japan and entertain as well as create a beautiful plate. I have started to try the kitchen menu with Chef Max being their creator - OMG - the flavor of these items are amazing. I have never had a bad meal and the prices are adequate to the portions. They are huge. Not sure what others are missing - but Nara is a great place to dine and enjoy dinner with friends or a date.

Re: “The Roxy

Just heard Jim Kilroy, a long time promoter of Kansas City local musicians bought the Roxy in late February 2014... Kilroy is known for helping numerous original bands get their start in the KC area as well as keeping the rock/metal scene alive in this town... His publication of the Banzai Magazine in the 80's flooded the streets of KC.
He was huge in putting the spotlight on bands such as Banshee, Mortal Reign, Leo Project, Red Line Chemistry and Black Oxygen just to name a few.
Kilroy has brought bands to the fore-front of the scene through his creation of events like Club Wars, Metal Wars, Benifit Shows, the Elvis Bash, Winterfest and the Kansas City Rock & Comic-Con (again just to name a few).
I see good things coming at the Roxy... congrats Jim Kilroy!!!!

Re: “The Red Balloon

About 5 years ago I was a regular here, so I went back with my wife hoping that it was still a good place.
I was disappointed, she was disgusted. The place was never 5 stars, and always felt that if the light of day hit anything inside it would turn to dust but it's even lost that bit of charm.
The tables were sticky, as were the chairs, the waitstaff was oblivious to non-existent.

Don't waste your time.

Re: “Clarette Club

Great bar with an amazing local feel. I think the easiest way to describe the bar is a dive but with a clean feel. Don't be scared of the menu, tacos are second to none and the burgers are tasty.

Re: “R.G.'s Lounge

I used to go to RG's (The Barcode) years ago, I know both the owners (nice guys if you get past the gruff exteriors) I am also a big fan of the show Bar Rescue, I heard about the stress test and went with a group of friends, and understood about the production aspect of everything that was going on.
That being said, I was out of town for the big reveal but went back in to see what was done a few days ago.
The sign outside was shoddy and hard to see, Bar rescue didn't really remodel much except above the bar, everything else they just slapped a coat of paint on and called it good. It looked cleaned up and redone on first sight, but when you stopped to take a closer look it was all half assed and really just a cover up that could have been done by anyone. They didn't even bother to patch nail holes or remove staples from old posters and such, they just painted over it all.
The new bar stools in the dining area are uncomfortable, and the video game area is collecting dust because it is a SPORTS bar, gamers stay home and play the video games they already like with their friends.
All and all I am disappointed in what Bar Rescue didn't do, as well as what they did half assed.
I can't wait to see the show, and how good it will look on TV, knowing what a shoddy job they actually did on my friends bar.
Bad form John Taffer, bad form.

Re: “R.G.'s Lounge

New to Independence as of June of 2013, it became my "corner bar". The Pitch article summed the place up pretty accurately. Only now, a few weeks ago, "Bar Rescue" has been there. They eliminated the band stage and dance floor. Dancing is gone.
On the stage, BR placed couches and in your face TV's. Supposedly some type of viewing pod where you and your friends can sit together watching any sporting event of your choice, or play video games together. 'Gonna draw in a younger crowd'. ~Sure it is.
Additionally, there is a fee to use those pods, supposedly more at a "minimum".
BR did upgrade the the 3 pool tables, but otherwise cheap shoddy work seems to be their m.o.. When they broke camp, the Bar Rescue crew left a dumpster or more of trash strewn all across the back parking lot. "Pigs" comes to mind.
They also removed the chairs and tables replacing them with taller stools and high tables. BR did considered the homeless though; they could now come in, buy an inexpensive beer, go sit in one of the stuffed armchairs BR lined the walls with, and then take a nap! Of course, only if they're "younger". *L*
Bar Rescue "claims" the new "BarCode", formerly RG's, will be booming after the the RG's rescue show airs on December 22nd. TWT.
Meanwhile, the once full parking lot on Thursdays and weekends is all but empty. Looking, but is still the "corner bar".
Once 4 stars but now only 2 stars, I gave it three stars because of the nice staff.

Re: “Clarette Club

dirty bar I get sick every time I drink there they need a bar rescue. Good music but the guy who books the band is a total douche bag who thinks he is a rock star.

Re: “Balanca's -- CLOSED

This was my place for a few years until late 2009 when I decided to retreat from the bars and work on career progression, becoming a home-owner, and advancing in other areas of my life. I remember chasing a purse thief, dancing my ass off Thursday nights, meeting band members, a few regulars, the owner Lori (which was freaking hilarious), and going downstairs-- my favorite part of the bar. My best memories were downstairs and the worst ones were upstairs. *lol* I also saw a lot of things that were crazy (in a bad way) and was even a part of a few of those moments, but I am not surprised it is closed. There seemed to be a lot of police activity there and that kept me away when I wanted to visit almost a year later in 2010. I was driving around between 9th and Main and 39th and Stateline, showing a friend of mine my old haunts and so many places were closed. We drove by the former Balanca's and saw the name had changed... so I came here to confirm it was indeed closed. I plan to check out the new place in December. Woot!

Re: “The Red Balloon

I give this bar a 5 star rating. I was in KC this past Saturday. My best friend and I went here on a whim. I had remembered the name form the Pitch website. I am glad we went. Granted it is a hole in the wall. But we had a blast!!! I was able to sing five times and I did not pay anything to sing. The DJ was excellent and very nice and courteous. The bartenders were great and fast. The crowd was a mixture of people. Old and young. We will definitely make the drive from Topeka and go again. People even gave me money for singing it bought me several drinks! Had a great time.

Re: “Cafe Trio

I ordered the Prince Edward Island Mussels and a nice white wine. The mussels were simply outstanding. I recall only one seafood dish in over a decade that had an equal in the richness of flavor and that was overseas. My only suggestion is to those ordering. Make certain you order extra toast (not the dinner role but the toast that comes with the dish) and a spoon because at the bottom, heaven in the form of a white wine garlic sauce, pancetta bits, onions, and tomatoes awaits the taste buds.

To top it off were bartenders who made certain my appetizer and wine experience was good.

Re: “The Roxy

The sound system needs someone who really KNOWS how to use it. The guy also seemed to have band favorites. Dude, it's not about YOUR night experience it's about your listeners and customers. FAIL!

I found a table with some band mates, the waitresses totally ignored us, Several of us had to get our own drinks after a 45 minute wait! Then when she finally did show, I asked her for some food ideas and she said the kitchen was closed. After I had seen her serve food right up to the minute I asked. She served me a $2 coke, I gave her a five, she said she would try to work some 'magic' with the kitchen for me, I said good and you keep the $3 tip. Ignored for the next hour!! I flag her down, get another coke, this time NO tip! She left laughing, what a dombass! I and my friends are very big tippers for service. she failed everyone!

Obviously this place has management problems!
And what's the point in having two pool tables that look like gravel trucks roll on them?

Total FAILURE! Call Bar Makeover FAST!!

I will NOT be back unless I make money in this place. By The looks of things, there isn't any to be had.

Sound Engineer and Restaurant Connoisseur

PS, My guys would have beat that jealous bar bitches ass all the way out the door. And would have sent that waitresses dumb ass with him!
