Re: “Aladdin Café

I love Aladin. We have been going for years. It's a tremendous value, the food is top notch, and the service is quick and very nice. You get soup or salad with just about everything, both are great, but their lentil soup is especially fantastic. There are MANY vegetarian options, highlighted by their vegetarian platter, which is diverse and huge. Although I stick with the veggie stuff, my wife loves the gyros. They don't put feta on them though, so be sure to ask for that if you want it. On 39th St, I would take Aladin over Jerusalem Cafe any day!

Re: “The Piano Room

Without the band on Thursday's this place sucks. I think this band needs a bigger place to play. The band is really good as others had mentioned. They are fun. The lead guy may not be the world's best lead singer, but he is good and the music selection is perfect for them. This isn't American Idol hour, but thank God it isn't. It rocks on a good night. They need to change their music list up a bit.

Re: “Don Chilito's Mexican Restaurant

Don Chilitos is Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex is not authentic. The point of Tex-Mex is to layer as much unhealthy stuff on a tortilla as possible (queso, sour cream, carnitas), and then add some zing with a mountain of unlimited tomato salsa. If you want authentic Mexican food, go to Western KS.

Re: “Blanc Burgers & Bottles

You can tell everything is fresh on this menu. Even the sauces are made. The decor is pretty trendy and so are the people that go there. Nothing like a burger-joint to make you feel unpopular or not artsy enough. If I had to pick between the Westport Flea Market (where you look at junk and feel like you might be in a cage match), or Blanc Burgers (you need artistic glasses and a scarf to fit in), I would pick Westport, due to the price and slightly better burgers.

Re: “Browne's Irish Market

Delightful neighborhood deli and Irish novelty store. Why hasn't anyone else written a review, the place has been there since 1887! Just across the street from Penn Valley Community College, the sandwiches are made to order. The best Irish corned beef or roast beef sandwich I've ever had. And the sides are great. Several co-workers love the buttermilk pasta salad, but I go for the Irish red-skin potato salad. Great prices.

Re: “Szechuan House

Do you remember when Chinese Food used to taste REALLY good? And your dishes had fresh vegetables and discernably different sauces other than "brown" or "white"? Well....We've got a winner in Szechuan House! Szechuan ouse is old-school chinese food, with all the bases covered -- a few musts...the scallion pancakes on the are dense and chewy, the shrimp and peapods have lots of fresh veggies and a classic light chinese sauce, the pepper beef is savory and perfect. AND, your fried rice will be made the right way, with just bean sprouts and onions -- no frozen mixed peas, carrot, corn blend here. Another bonus...they deliver on $30 or more. Give it a try and take a trip to Chinese before the buffet.

Re: “The Drop

first of all the review that is listed on the pitch website for this restaurant is not current at all. the drop has a new menu & a new chef. i found this out when my husband and i went to the drop for our aniversary this past sunday. we ordered the sunday Prix Fixe menu wich includes 4 courses and a bottle of wine for only 50 bucks. i will admit that after reading the pitch review of this restaurant i was not exactly expecting to be blown away. i was pleasently surprised. our first course was a house made gnocchi with bacon, walnuts, gorgonzola and a white apple ale reduction. it was incredible and was paired perfectly by the chef with a tiny taste of Ephemere by Unibroue. then we moved on to the salad course which was a brilliant combination of pistachios, peppadews and truffle/grapfruit vinaigrette. there is nothing that could have left are pallets more prepared for the bold flavors left to come in our meal prgression. my husband had the coffee encrusted ribeye with a chocolate-malbec reduction, i had the popcorn encrusted red snapper which was paired with a chili caramel sauce. this dish played the perfect riddle to the caramel popcorn i loved as a kid. it was so intriguing in my mouth yet every question i had about its creation was somehow answered with each bite. breakfast for dessert was probably the most surprising thing we had that night. it is french toast baguette with the perfect dose of espresso gelato and nutella coated bacon. absolutely unbelieveable! the best meal i have had in this city and the best gnocchi i have had in my life. we went to the back to give our compliments and were so surprised by the size of the kitchen and the lack of commercial equpment it contained. a hot plate, an oven and 2 panini presses... unbelieveable. i asked the chef how she made this caliber of food in such a sub par kitchen. she replied: "i have more equipment here now that what was available when some of these traditions were established... it's humbling but the reward is simply found in blowing people away." blow us away, she did! the drop is the best kept secret in Kansas City and i'm going to do my best to make sure it does not stay that way.

Re: “Location-less Comments

Musical production of "You're a good man, Charlie Brown" playing tonight (6/26) and tomorrow night at the Granada Theater in KCK. My wife and I went to see it last night, the young people put on a great show. The production is staged in a neat old building, completed in 1929. http://www.imagodeiarts.org/site_pages.cfm?pageID=1332 It’s located at 1015 Minnesota Ave: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=1015+Minnesota+Ave+Kansas+City+KS&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=us&ei=ashESq6PDZCqtge8w_mnAQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1 The show is a musical, real live performers with a live 5- or 6-piece ensemble providing the music for the show. The props aren’t extensive, but for those of us that grew up with the Peanuts comics and TV specials it’s not a stretch to connect the skits with our memories. Small children might not have the same appreciation though, and probably won’t be overwhelmed by the set and visuals. The period seats are clean and comfy, the main gallery has all been reupholstered. The show is about 2 hours total with a 15 minute intermission halfway through. The place does have a whiff of an old smell to it, call it ‘nostalgic’. :>) Walk-in admission is $12.50, or $10 each for a group of 4. Get out of the heat and enjoy a nice theater production in a nicely restored 1200 seat theater / movie house.

Re: “Ricco's Italian Bistro

I love this place. It sits across the street from JCCC (SE corner). I've only been there twice, both on Wednesdays. The Wednesday special is $3 off lasagna or manicotti. I had lasagna the first time and manicotti the second, both with meat sauce. Both were great. The lasagna itself was a little thin between layers, but I suppose they do that so they can top it with different sauces, and it had plenty of layers (5 or 6). The sauce is spiced just right, and the meat is soft and slightly sweet. They give you plenty of food. A dining partner had a strawberry salad which consisted of spinach leaves smothered with strawberries and pine nuts. It looked really interesting. Nice atmosphere, and the wait staff was friendly and helpful, although not always attentive.

Re: “Dos Reales

I stumbled across this place one Thursday and wandered in. They had a green chile burrito as the special. It wasn't the same kind of green chile I was used to (having grown up in New Mexico), but it was green and had some zing, and big chunks of tasty, succulent pork. Very tasty. The lunch size fajitas are wonderful too. No matter what you order, they give you too much food. I didn't find it overly spicy, but I'm a chilehead and have more tolerance than most. They have both red and green El Yucateo on the tables if you need it spiced up more. The service has always been excellent, and the wait staff very attentive. I highly recommend this place.

Re: “Big T's Bar-B-Q

i started eating BIG T barbeque at the blue ridge blvd location and then they opened up another a bit closer to me and in the beginning, it was excellent, truly the best in town but my luck with the new place just isn't the same. the burnt ends are tough everytime i get them so i have stopped eating there. people are nice and maybe i will get to the other location to see if their quality is staying consistent. thought i had found my favorite bbq place but now i am not so sure.

Re: “Flavor of India

This has become my favorite Indian restaurant. I never believed Ruchi's could be topped but they have done it. The menu has all the typical dishes but here the flavor is so much more alive. The sevice is great, atmosphere nice. Only down side is no alcohol served. If you haven't tried this place...go now.
